We are now recruiting for our next Cohort of PhD researchers. Applicants from any discipline are invited to apply to the UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in Citizen-Centred Artificial Intelligence (CCAI).

The application deadline is 5pm, 10th January 2025 with a start date of September 2025. All applicants should review the information below and on the Application Process and Application Resources pages before applying. 

Successful applicants will receive a comprehensive stipend at UKRI rates (currently £19,237 for 2023/24, with annual increases) and full tuition fees. 

Studentships are also available for applicants who wish to study on a part-time basis in combination with work of personal responsibilities.  

We expect that our cohort of students will work closely with our non-academic partners to ensure that the citizen voice is heard throughout the design, development, implementation and evaluation stages of AI innovation.   

Note that no prior AI expertise is needed, foundational training in AI will be offered and a personalised training plan will be developed for PhD researchers at the outset.

Before you can complete the online application form, you will need to prepare the following documents: 

  1. Curriculum Vitae (CV) 
  2. Research Proposal (using the provided template). 
  3. Personal Statement (optional) 
  4. Degree Certificate(s) and Transcripts 
  5. English Language Certificates (for international students only) 

 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Academic excellence i.e. 2:1 (or equivalent GPA from non-UK universities with preference for 1st class honours); or a Masters (preference for Merit or above); or APEL evidence of substantial practitioner achievement.
  • Appropriate IELTS score, if required.
  • Applicants cannot apply if they are already a PhD holder or if currently engaged in Doctoral study at Northumbria or elsewhere.
  • From academic year 2024/25, studentship awards are open to applications from UK and International (including EU) applicants as per UKRI guidelines. Applicants should check their eligibility prior to applying. Please note there are a limited number of international awards available.
