TAKING STOCK

A residency by Grace Denton
07/12/2022 – 17/12/2022

Artist and PhD Student Grace Denton will be in residence at Gallery North in December 2022.

‘I am a practice-based PhD student at Northumbria University. Whilst in residence at Gallery North, I will be bringing the different strands of my work together in one space. I am a neurodivergent artist interested in the languages of sovereignty and medical diagnosis, how they shape our understanding of ourselves, and allow (or prevent) self-actualisation. I am part of the Cultural Negotiation of Science research group along with my supervisor Christine Borland.

A patchworked oilcloth curtain and lighting design shape the gallery space, making it ready to host events, broadcasts and an expanded studio practice.

I co-founded The Wardrobe, a safe space at The Newbridge Project for trans, non-binary and genderqueer people to get dressed. I have a monthly show on Slack’s Radio called Holding My Nerve that tracks my research process. Alongside Jo Hauge I also run a weekly online session for neurodivergent artists and researchers called Making Time.’
