Current CPD courses available.

Introduction to Creative Writing in the Classroom

The Introduction to Creative Writing in the Classroom provides practicing primary and secondary teachers with the skills and confidence to improve their teaching of creative writing.

Creative writing is fundamental to the national curriculum at both primary and secondary levels. It continues to be an essential tool for encouraging pupils’ understanding and perception as well as developing their written language skills and is an assessed component at GCSE and A level.

Aimed at all teachers from primary to A-level, the course develops subject-specific knowledge and pedagogy. By developing teachers’ own creative writing skills, it enhances their competence and confidence in delivering creative writing within the classroom. Alongside this creative development, explorations of pedagogy enable participants to develop effective techniques for teaching the subject.

The course is taught over one semester, covering prose fiction and pedagogy. The module is taught over 11 two-hour evening sessions. Students will develop their writing skills and explore the relations between writing and pedagogy. They will be encouraged to think about how the creative writing exercises they have been undertaking as part of the course might be adapted for their own classrooms. In alternate weeks teachers will develop their writing in conjunction with our MA Creative Writing students, and then explore the relations between writing and pedagogy as a dedicated group. The sessions introduce students to the workshop method so central to the delivery of creative writing in universities, providing them with a supportive environment within which they can develop their own creative writing skills. A range of writing styles and techniques are covered. In addition, however, the course continually draws upon the teachers’ experiences in the classroom encouraging them to think about how the creative writing exercises they have been undertaking as part of the course might be adapted for their own classrooms.

This is a non-accredited CPD course. We also run an accredited Post Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing in the Classroom.

What our students say
“Creative Writing in the Classroom is a fantastic course. Not only does it provide opportunities for professional development but personal too. I have found our discussions of Creative Writing pedagogy particularly useful and they have enabled me to re-think my practice. In addition, I have shared ideas from my course with my colleagues who have all implemented them too!” — Ashleigh Thompson
