About this course

This course is an open Continuing Professional Development course. In order to book, please follow the booking link, or if not available, fill out the enquiry form and a member of staff will be in touch with you shortly.

The content is delivered over two consecutive working weeks. There is then a self-study revision week, with the exam taking place the following week. The concentrated timeframe is ideal for those who wish to achieve their Certificate quickly, within four weeks from start to finish. Other modes of block attendance may also be available.

We also offer part-time and distance learning versions of the course that typically take nine months.

The modules are taught through a series of interactive lectures during which the topics are related to workplace experiences of class members. In addition, videos, slides and practical inspections, for example of the University machine shops and laboratories, are incorporated into the sessions so that the material is kept relevant and interesting.

 The NEBOSH Certificate is a widely recognised and respected qualification and will be delivered by highly qualified, experienced tutors over 3 units;

  • NGC1: Management of Health and Safety
  • GC2: Controlling Workplace Hazards
  • GC3: Health and Safety Practical Application

NGC1, Management of Health and Safety

This module will begin with a general introduction to health and safety management. The module will then begin to explore policy considerations, organisational requirements, health and safety culture (and its promotion), methods for assessing risk, principles of control, incident investigation and techniques/strategies for conducting reviews and auditing.

GC2, Controlling Workplace Hazards

This module examines each of the key groups of hazards likely to be encountered in the workplace, namely those arising from: movement of people and vehicles, manual and mechanical handling, work equipment, electrical equipment, fire, chemical and biological agents, physical hazards, psychological issues and construction activities. Suitable control methods and strategies are discussed for each group of hazards.

GC3, Health and Safety Practical Application

The module prepares students to:

  • Carry out, unaided, a safety inspection of a workplace, identifying the more common hazards, deciding whether they are adequately controlled and, where necessary, suggesting appropriate and cost-effective remedial action.
  •  To prepare a report that persuasively urges management to take
appropriate action, explaining why such action is needed (including reference to possible breaches of legislation) and identifying, with due consideration of reasonable practicability, the remedial measures that should be implemented.

Learn from the Best

The course will be delivered by highly skilled and experienced professionals, approved by NEBOSH (the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health).

Holders of the National General Certificate are entitled to Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The qualification also meets the academic requirements for Technical Membership (Tech IOSH) of IOSH and Associate Membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

Teaching and Assessment

With the block release mode, your employer will release you for a two-week block of intensive study. During this period you’ll attend a series of interactive lectures that cover essential topics and relate them to workplace experiences. You can expect videos and practical inspections of real-world locations that illustrate how principles are put into practice.

You will then have a further week of self-study and revision before the final assessments.

The assessments include two written examinations administered by NEBOSH. There is also a requirement to write a short report based on a practical health and safety inspection. A typical report will identify potential hazards, outline the reasons for taking action (including reference to possible breaches of legislation), and set out remedial measures that could be implemented.

Give Your Career an Edge

Employers recognise that staff with a NEBOSH Certificate have a practical set of skills that bring real value to the workplace. Wherever you work, you’ll know how to help your organisation avoid prosecution, litigation, absence costs and loss of reputation. As a result you can expect enhanced career prospects and a range of new opportunities.

As a holder of a NEBOSH Certificate, you’ll be able to apply for associate membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). This is an opportunity to link into networks that offer support, resources and career development.

Your Future

The Certificate is a first step in a career in health and safety. It’s a Level 3
qualification that provides a sound basis for studying further qualifications
offered by NEBOSH. These include their Diploma in Occupational Safety and
Health and their Certificate in Construction, both of which can be achieved
through courses offered by Northumbria University.
