The NEBOSH Diploma is a widely recognised and respected qualification and will be delivered by highly qualified, experienced tutors over 4 units;

  • Unit A: Managing health and safety
  • Unit B: Hazardous agents in the workplace
  • Unit C: Workplace and work equipment safety
  • Unit D: Application of health and safety theory and practice

Unit A: Managing Health and Safety, begins by looking at principles of health and safety management before moving on to explore: loss causation and incident investigation; the measuring and reviewing of health and safety performance, identifying hazards, assessing and evaluating risks; risk control; organisational factors; human factors; principles of health and safety law and safety law.

Unit B: Hazardous Agents in the Workplace, focuses on occupational health and hygiene, covering: principles of toxicology and epidemiology; hazardous substances and other chemicals- assessment of risk; hazardous substances and other chemicals- engineering controls and personal protective equipment; monitoring and measuring; biological agents; physical agents (noise, vibration and radiation); psychosocial agents; musculoskeletal risks and controls; work environment risks and controls and managing occupational health.

Unit C: Workplace and Work Equipment Safety, focuses on the management and control of hazards arising within the workplace, specifically covering: general workplace issues; principles of fire and explosion; workplace fire risk assessment; storage, handling and processing of dangerous substances; work equipment (general); work equipment (workplace machinery); work equipment (mobile, lifting and access); electrical safety and electricity at work regulations 1989; construction hazards and controls; workplace transport and driving for work and pressure system hazards and controls.

Unit D: Application of Health and Safety Theory and Practice, allows students to apply their knowledge and skills in health and safety in their chosen workplace environment. The student is required to carry out a detailed review of health and safety performance, and produce a justified action plan to improve performance.

The course will be delivered by highly skilled and experienced professionals, approved by NEBOSH (the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health).

Holders of the National General Certificate are entitled to Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The qualification also meets the academic requirements for Technical Membership (Tech IOSH) of IOSH and Associate Membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).


As a distance learner, you’ll be provided with a copy of the course text as well as access to our eLearning Portal that contains a wealth of relevant material and sample exam questions. You’ll also be given access to Northumbria’s IT and library systems, allowing you to use resources such as electronic journals, databases and software. Feedback is provided by the course tutor and we provide additional support in face-to-face sessions at the University.

Assessments include two written examinations administered by NEBOSH, which must be taken at the University. There is also a requirement to write a short report based on a practical health and safety inspection. A typical report will identify potential hazards, outline the reasons for taking action (including reference to possible breaches of legislation), and set out remedial measures that could be implemented.

As a holder of a NEBOSH Certificate, you’ll be able to apply for associate membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). This is an opportunity to link into networks that offer support, resources and career development.


The Certificate is a first step in a career in health and safety. It’s a Level 3 qualification that provides a sound basis for studying further qualifications offered by NEBOSH. These include their Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health and their Certificate in Construction, both of which can be achieved through courses offered by Northumbria University on a part-time or distance learning basis.

This Certificate is aimed at managers, supervisors and staff whose day-to-day responsibilities include health and safety. It covers essential topics like how to assess risks, control hazards, undertake auditing, and promote a safety-conscious culture. We’ll prepare you to carry out a rigorous inspection of a workplace, assessing hazards and controls, and recommending remedial actions. The Certificate is a widely recognised first step in a career in health and safety, suitable for all types of organisations. Over 175,000 people have gained the Certificate since it was launched over 25 years ago. The distance learning version of the course is delivered over nine months and you’ll have the flexibility to do the bulk of studying at home while receiving extensive tutor support. The final exam and assessment will be held in Newcastle. We also offer the option to study part-time in Newcastle over nine months or by block release (which includes two weeks of intensive teaching). 

Students are provided with a copy of the course text (RRC course notes), and have access to our eLearning site which contains a wealth of course material and example exam questions. Students will also be given a library card and access to the University IT system, including resources such as electronic journals, databases, software and standards).


There are no specific entry requirements, and no previous health and safety knowledge is necessary but candidates should note the assessment includes a requirement to write a short report. International applicants are required to have one of the following English language qualifications with grades as shown below; A British Council International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.0 (or above) with a minimum score in each component of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking of 5.5 Pearson Academic score of 54 (or above) with a minimum score in each component of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking of 51.
