This module is commissioned by Health Education England as part of its continuing workforce development (CWD) portfolio. If you are interested in participating, please complete the application form and gain authorisation from your Line Manager and your Trust Training Coordinator.

This is a module focused upon practice and skills acquisition, particularly in the areas of the development of the admission profile and early interview. Mental Health Practitioners will be developing and acquiring skills in these areas in order to progress care treatment and management related to care planning and care evaluation. The practitioners skills repertoire will therefore be enhanced in relation to using a systematised approach to history recording, formulation, assessment and risk assessment and management. The module aims to provide students with the opportunity to critically explore the nature of history taking and its contribution to comprehensive assessment in mental health and/or learning disability care. The module will also encourage students to reflect upon their own blend of using theory and skills in practice, and the development of skills in the areas outlined above.

Designed by a multi-professional team including Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Midwives, Social Care Staff and Medical practitioners our range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is tailored towards individuals who are driving and enabling practice development in NHS North East.

Northumbria is the principal provider of nurse education in the North East of England and was named Nurse Education Provider of the Year (post-registration) for three consecutive years by Student Nursing Times.

We have excellent relationships with partner services in health, social care and social work and our range of CPD provision supports practitioners and managers to engage in professional learning and then examine how this can be integrated in the practice arena.


The module will be delivered through a combination of guided study, structured lectures and practical workshops. You will be able to participate in practice sessions from the beginning of this intensive course. An opportunity to practice these skills is timetabled in the module.

You will be assessed on both theoretical and practical elements of the module, through a multiple choice and short answer examination, as well as a multi-station objective structured clinical examination (OSCE).


This module is based at our Coach Lane Campus where you will have access to cutting-edge facilities with technology embedded through all aspects of your CPD course.

This course would suit a range of healthcare professionals who would like to develop their practice in the area of history taking and physical assessment. It is recommended for those practitioners who are either currently required to use these skills in practice or in the near future.
