What will I learn on this module?
This module will aim to introduce you to the importance of personal and academic development skills that are essential for your programme of study. The skills developed in this module will help you to succeed in all modules on the programme. Topics such as searching for and understanding literature, learning how to be an independent student, essay writing, referencing, and presentation skills will be covered.
For the assessment, you will complete a workbook. The workbook will be aligned to seminar and lecture activities. You will complete tasks linked to study skills that will facilitate your personal and academic development. You will be expected to draw upon current theory and consider the impact of this issue within a sport context.
How will I learn on this module?
The taught content will be delivered and provided in a variety of formats, and you will be able to access materials on the eLP module site. The module is taught via lectures where we will consider theory and research findings on aspects related to the essential skills you require as student. There will also be the opportunity to work in smaller groups with discipline specific members of staff who will facilitate context driven discussion and learning. Tutorials will be used for drop-in sessions to support your practical learning and there will be specific seminars and tutorials to guide your assessment. You will also be set independent tasks informed by key literature to complete outside of class time to further develop your understanding of the taught content.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the eLP. Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. You will be provided with content verbally and guided through tasks during timetabled sessions. A dedicated assessment session will afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions in class. The Module Leader is there to support you with any queries that you may have about the module content, and all staff members provide tutorial time outside of class time. Module tutors will provide you with the necessary information on how to arrange a tutorial. You will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on your development during the module, and you will receive feedback on summative work to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial. There are also further academic skills support available from the University Library services where you can gain access to study skills / academic writing and support materials, as well as links to booking both on and off campus study skills sessions.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed by an independent workbook (3000 words) (100%, MLO’s 1-4). The workbook is designed to encompass the main learning points from the module. This will be submitted via Turnitin and receive electronic feedback.
A formative assessment opportunity will be provided to practice report writing skills and content, as well as group presentation skills. Workbook progress will be checked during seminars.
You will receive written or audio feedback on your summative assessment to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial.

Module abstract
We want you to be a successful student, and this module will equip you with the skills required to achieve success. Within the module, you will develop your personal and academic skills to support your studies. As such, what you learn in this module can be applied to all other modules you study. You will develop the skills needed to help you organise and present your work. We will also help you to explore sources if information and guide you in considering how to interpret and display this. As with other modules on this Foundation year, this module will support you in understanding how to reflect on yourself in order to develop your abilities as a sport student.

Full time Courses are primarily delivered via on-campus face to face learning but could include elements of online learning.
