What will I learn on this module?
The module aims to facilitate the assessment of work based learning as part of your academic programme in order to promote professional and personal development and enhance interpersonal skills.
It will give you the opportunity to apply appropriate sections of the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence. Initially you will be look at the RICS Mandatory Competencies. In the second part of the module you will be required to select three of the RICS Core Competencies applicable to the RICS APC Pathway that you have chosen and reflect on the experience you have.
You will be assessed by way of a portfolio.
How will I learn on this module?
The focus of the module is the analysis and synthesis of work based learning experiences. The module will be introduced by a one-hour lecture to discuss the module syllabus and assessment requirements.
The eLP, telephone and email will be used as a means of communication once the initial briefings have taken place.
As you are in employment your workplace will be the main learning environment, in effect acting as a framework for business and professional development. However, tutor support will be available via drop-in sessions throughout the module study period.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
a Summative assessment and rationale for tasks
You will be required to submit a portfolio of evidence demonstrating how each of the competencies have been achieved. For each competency a reflective commentary will be required synthesising work based learning experiences and where appropriate academic study. The rationale for this is to help prepare the student for their professional training after graduation.
The portfolio will be submitted in two parts:
Part 1 – Mandatory competencies
Part 2 – Three Core competencies
b. Additional formative assessment – detail of process and rationale
You will be required to submit evidence of work based skills and learning prior to the drop-in tutorials at university in which formative assessment and further guidance will be provided to you by your tutor.
c. Indication of how students will get feedback and how this will support their learning
Written feedback will be provided to you on the portfolio parts submitted in Semester 1 and Semester 2 and issued via the eLearningPortal.
Tutors will respond to any generic questions posed via the module’s eLearning Portal so that the whole student cohort can benefit.

What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
• ML01: Demonstrate the ability to achieve a range of competencies specified in the RICS APC requirements.
• ML02: Demonstrate the ability to select, develop and apply in a practical situation specialised technical knowledge in the chosen area of study, using prior and new discipline specific learning.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
• ML03: Demonstrate competence in planning and implementing a learning strategy.
• ML04: Demonstrate the ability to report on and evaluate a project, critically analyse and reflect on their own capability and effectiveness in the workplace.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
• ML05: Demonstrate the capacity for independent, evidence based thinking and decision making.
How will I be assessed?
Summative assessment
Via an on-line portfolio (100% weighting) demonstrating how each of the competencies has been achieved. For each competency a reflective commentary will be required synthesising work based learning experiences and where appropriate academic study.
The portfolio will assess ML01,02,03,04,05.
Formative assessment
Written feedback will be given on the scripts submitted and provided on the eLP where relevant.

Semester One
‘Business and Professional Development’ is designed to allow you to focus on the mandatory competencies of the RICS.
Semester Two
‘Business and Professional Development’ is designed to allow you to focus on the core competencies of the RICS APC Pathway you have chosen. You will have a free choice to select three of the core competencies to develop.
Your workplace will act as a framework for business and professional development to develop your professional skills.
