TE5507 - Student Tutoring

What will I learn on this module?

You will learn how to be a tutor of students in schools or colleges. You will develop your skills in communicating effectively with children or young people. As part of this process you will learn how to evaluate your own learning of how to support these pupils’ learning over a series of lessons. You will be learning how to transmit your own enthusiasm for learning in a professional context to pupils within the schooling system. You will learn about the issues facing teachers and other professionals within the school, college or learning centre. Learning how to apply your existing skills and knowledge in a work related context will be an important focus of this module for you. Knowing how to determine which skills and knowledge are relevant, and make appropriate use of these in the work context, will be a major learning opportunity for you.

How will I learn on this module?

In ‘Student Tutoring’ you will be involved in working in a school or college, working with individual and small groups of pupils under the supervision of a qualified teacher. At the start of the module you will learn how to construct and maintain a learning log which you will be able to use to chart and evaluate your own learning. The main focus of the module is for you to learn under the supervision of a qualified teacher in the work context tutoring pupils in your chosen age phase( primary or secondary). You will learn by reflecting on your own practice in supporting the learning of the pupils. You will complete a minimum of 70 hours of direct engagement spread over at least 10 weeks. You will spend a minimum of 10 whole days in your placement. The work will spread across both semesters with a minimum of 10 hours in semester one.
In developing the presentation for this module’s assessment you will be learning how to communicate and enthuse others about your learning of theories of personal and professional development. You will learn how to reflect upon and accept responsibility for managing your own learning in the workplace and identify and analyse the impact of your work on the pupils.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

At the start of this ‘student tutoring’ module you will be trained in effective approaches and skilled behaviours for tutoring pupils in the school or college context. Through workshops you will be supported in developing theories of personal development through the setting up and use of a learning log. Within the placement you will be supported by a qualified teacher as you learn to tutor the pupils. You will have seminars to support discussions about your work place experiences and to support you through the assessment criteria. You will have tutorials along with self directed learning resources on Blackboard that will help you connect your learning in the training sessions, seminars and workshops to your experiences on placement.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. You will be expected to learn how to transmit your own enthusiasm for learning to pupils in the placement context gaining an awareness of the complexities of supporting pupils’ learning.
2. You will gain an understanding of the issue that teachers and education professionals have to address through your awareness of theories of personal and professional development in relation to your own experiences on this module.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
1. You will develop skills in using and selecting appropriate knowledge, resources and learning to enhance your personal performance in the work place and identify, analyse and communicate your impact through this process.
2. You will be able to reflect on and take responsibility for managing your own learning and development in the workplace environment.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
1. You will develop the ethical characteristics of a Northumbria Undergraduate as you analyse your abilities in having an impact upon pupils’ learning and communicate your personal development that has taken place in the work place environment leading to enhanced employability.

How will I be assessed?

Please give details of all formative and summative assessment process indicating which MLOs will be addressed and how feedback will be provided.

Your summative assessment is in two parts. The first will be the attendance record which your teacher will be required to sign. This includes the opportunity for the teacher to write some qualitative comments about your learning and abilities to tutor pupils. This attendance record is a pass/fail.
The criteria the student has to meet to obtain a good grade in this part of the summative assessment work.

The second summative assessment (100%) is a formal presentation by you to the module tutors about your learning on the module drawing upon your reflections and evaluations in your learning log. It is set up to simulate a job interview to give you the experience of articulating your skills development and impact that you had within the placement.

Formative assessment will be ongoing feedback by the teacher in the placement context about your developing skills as a tutor to the pupils. You will also receive feedback in tutorials, workshops and seminars on your developing understanding and contributions to the discussions and your reflections in your learning log.

Pre-requisite(s)

You must apply for and gain clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service through the Independent Safeguarding Authority to enable you to work with children and young people in schools or colleges. DBS for use on option modules is not funded by the University.If you do not already have a DBS, which has been processed by Northumbria, you will need to fund this yourself. The University will support the application process but you will need to fund this yourself.

Module abstract

In ‘student tutoring’ you will have the opportunity to work in schools or colleges with pupils. With 10 whole days in placement over the year there are 70 hours of engagement in the module. You will work with individual pupils and small groups under the supervision of a qualified teacher. This will enhance your learning and skills development as you try to enthuse pupils in their learning.You will be supported through discussions in workshops, seminars and tutorials helping you to understand ways people learn and how professionals in the workplace develop pupils’ learning. Through a ‘learning log’ you will manage your own learning and analyse and reflect on the impact you have within the workplace. This will develop your employability as you articulate your learning from your experiences in the workplace and communicate your processes and the impact you have had in the assessed presentation.
