What will I learn on this module?
Through a variety of reading topics, you will develop your vocabulary and understanding of text construction, enhancing your reading comprehension and your ability to cope with higher volumes of reading. You will receive grammatical instruction in context to develop your language accuracy and range, ensuring you can communicate simply and effectively in writing.
How will I learn on this module?
This module is a combination of taught, guided and independent study designed to develop your language ability in preparation for study requiring upper-intermediate level. You will practise reading and writing at regular intervals, receiving tutorship throughout and learning how to foster independence through peer support and use of key tools.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will have access to texts and materials on the module Blackboard site.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

How will I be assessed?
Formative assessment process
You will complete a combination of self-assessed and submitted tasks that help you identify your strengths and areas for improvement throughout the module, which will be supplemented by peer and/or tutor-led feedback.
Summative assessment process
You will complete a separate portfolio of tasks for each of the key skills involved in the module, reading and writing.
These portfolios will comprise in-semester tasks that give an indication of your mastery and engagement at key points in the module, as well as end of semester examinations under timed conditions that determine your overall achievement against the module learning outcomes.

Module abstract
In this module, you will develop your reading and writing skills to prepare you for studies requiring upper-intermediate (B2) level. You will be exposed to various types of text and learn to analyse and understand them. In addition, you will develop your ability to write in an organised manner, summarise ideas and develop your linguistic ability to cope with the demands at higher levels.
