You will learn through a blended learning approach which will incorporate the use of the University’s interactive online eLearning Portal (eLP), lectures, discussions and workshops. Technology enabled learning will be enhanced through your interaction with the eLP which will give you the flexibility to access the module materials and aids remotely. The lectures will cover theories and concepts that will enable you to tackle a series of guided exercises. Many of the exercises will ensure you co-construct knowledge collaboratively with your module peers during the workshops. You will be required to actively engage in research rich learning through an enquiry based approach to ensure authentic learning.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Support will include feedback from tutors during workshops and tutorials. In addition tutors will respond to questions via the module’s discussion board at the University’s eLearning Portal (eLP) so that the whole group may benefit. Tutors will guide you through exercises during the timetabled sessions. The University’s eLP offers remote access to materials and aids for reinforcing your learning. Further academic support is available through a one-to-one tutorial with the module tutor who will be responsible for marking your summative assessment.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Undertaking the module should enable the student to:

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Contextualise the concepts and central components of CBT; applying that knowledge to case studies.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
2. Enhance independent learning abilities required to develop skills in critically evaluating evidence and drawing conclusions about it usefulness to professional practice.
3. Draw upon IT skills to facilitate their professional development and communication strategies e.g. using a PowerPoint Presentation to present and justify their case study.
4. Provide a robust and well considered critical discussion to their peers in the context of wider theories and practice, during workshops and in their summative written case study.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
5. Demonstrate and reinforce the characteristics of a Post Graduate Northumbria student. These will be evident as they show innovation in applying CBT concepts and theories to case studies, together with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to critically examine and interpret knowledge in the discipline.

How will I be assessed?

MLO’s 1 -5 will be addressed formatively and summatively.

The formative assessment for this module requires the student to complete various exercises during the lectures and workshops.
Completion of the exercises will demonstrate the ability to:
• Research and critically evaluate differing types of evidence; discussing with peers and teachers how relevant the evidence is to their own clinical practice.
• Work collaboratively within a learning community; presenting information to your module peers in a variety of formats.

The student will be encouraged to seek formative feedback from both module tutors and peers before the summative assessment date which presents them with the opportunity to improve their evidence of learning through critical reflection and constructive criticism.

The summative assessment for this module requires the student to write a 3000 word critical exploration and evaluation of a case study that demonstrates their ability to contextualise the central components of CBT.

Module abstract

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for Long Term Conditions is a bespoke module aimed at practitioners working in physical health settings. Practitioners who undertake this module will engage in authentic learning through exploration of clinical case studies. Knowledge will be co-constructed collaboratively with your module peers during the workshops. CBT’s structured approach is time efficient and can be used in everyday clinical practice. Successful completion of the module does not allow students to work in CBT Therapy. However, the basic core CBT skills which will be developed and practised throughout the module which will enable practitioners to apply ‘CBT first aid’ techniques to their service users.
