What will I learn on this module?
You will experience a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials, which will be supplemented with independent study tasks through the provision of reading and case studies. Tasks will be undertaken and then reviewed in the following session. These sessions are supported by the Electronic Learning Platform (eLP) where you can review key ideas from lectures and seminars. Together, the combination of independent study tasks and taught sessions will help you develop conceptual knowledge of international resource management and its application.
How will I learn on this module?

How will I be supported academically on this module?
Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the eLP. Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. You will be provided with content verbally and guided through tasks during timetabled sessions. A dedicated assessment session will afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions in class. The Module Leader is there to support you with any queries that you may have about the module content, and all staff members provide tutorial time outside of class time. Module tutors will provide you with the necessary information on how to arrange a tutorial. You will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on your development during the module, and you will receive feedback on summative work to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial. There is also further academic skills support available from the University Library services.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Critically evaluate the contribution of international federations to the development and management of sport events.
2. Examine how mastery of new knowledge draws upon relevant, up-to-date theory and models in the context of sport event management.
Intellectual / Professional Skills & Abilities:
3. Evaluate the complexity of factors that could impact on sport event management within different international contexts.
4. Critically appraise how the knowledge and skills gained in the module build upon current competencies and how these have been / could be applied in order to manage complexities and dilemmas in sport event management.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural Awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
5. Critically debate how ethical principles might influence sport event management in a variety of international contexts.
How will I be assessed?
Formative assessment: Students will receive feedback from a variety of seminar-based tasks; an ‘Assessment Guidance Session’ will be provided; and there will be group tutorials and individual tutorials at which students can present and discuss their ideas and progress towards the summative assessment.
Summative Assessment:
1. Report, 4,000 words (100% of module mark).
A report incorporating sport event planning, managing and evaluation
MLOs 1,2,3,4 & 5.
You will receive written or audio feedback on your summative assessment to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial.

Module abstract
From the Olympic Games through to charity fun-runs, sport events have become vehicles for political advancement, economic regeneration, national or regional pride, social integration, community action, health promotion and, of course, sporting excellence … not to mention bribery, corruption, doping, cheating and illegal gambling. This module aims to develop a critical appreciation of the knowledge, techniques, skills and values used to plan, organise, lead, control and evaluate international sports events. You will learn from experts in the sport event industry, and will hear about, question, debate and observe issues related to the management of major sport events. You will explore the event planning process, examine the economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts of major events, and consider legal aspects of event management. At the end of this module it is hoped that you will want to work in the sport event industry.
