What will I learn on this module?
In this module you will be provided with the opportunity to develop knowledge, competencies and skills in resource management and planning in an international context. Managing people and finances is the key to successful international sport organisations. ‘International Resource Management for Sport’ allows you to develop your knowledge, skills and competencies in these two key facets of management by focusing both the teaching and the assessment to specific resource issues in sport organisations. You will be considering recent and relevant research articles to supplement practical application which will enhance your employability. Finally, you will benefit from the international context of this module in terms of content, examples and the experiences of your fellow-students.
How will I learn on this module?
You will experience a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials, which will be supplemented with independent study tasks through the provision of reading and case studies. Tasks will be undertaken and then reviewed in the following session. These sessions are supported by the Electronic Learning Platform (eLP) where you can review key ideas from lectures and seminars. Together, the combination of independent study tasks and taught sessions will help you develop conceptual knowledge of international resource management and its application. This application is further developed with a visit to a sports organisation to link theory with practice.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the eLP. Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. You will be provided with content verbally and guided through tasks during timetabled sessions. A dedicated assessment session will afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions in class. The Module Leader is there to support you with any queries that you may have about the module content, and all staff members provide tutorial time outside of class time. Module tutors will provide you with the necessary information on how to arrange a tutorial. You will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on your development during the module, and you will receive feedback on summative work to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial. There is also further academic skills support available from the University Library services.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. You will demonstrate a critical understanding of resource management and planning in international sport organisations.
2. You will synthesise and apply concepts and factors impacting upon financial management within an international sport organisation.
Intellectual / Professional Skills & Abilities:
3. You will analyse a set of financial accounts using appropriate tools and techniques.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural Awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
4. You will identify and analyse concepts and external factors impacting upon human resource practices.
How will I be assessed?
Formative assessment: You will be given the opportunity to do a formative writing task and receive feedback and feed-forward on the work submitted. This will support you in doing assessment one. You will be encouraged to engage in classroom activities to ensure you understand the theoretical underpinning. Tutorial support will be available for written assignments to discuss the proposed structure, content and references.
Summative Assessment:
1. Essay, 2,000 words (50% of module mark).
An essay incorporating the critical appreciation of human resource management concepts and ideas, and the factors that impact upon these in international sport organisations
MLOs 1 & 4.
2. Report, 2,000 words (50% of module mark).
The report requires students to apply the concepts of financial management to examples from the international sport management industry
MLOs 2 & 3.
You will receive written or audio feedback on your summative assessment to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial.

Module abstract

You will be considering recent and relevant research articles to supplement practical application which will enhance your employability. Finally, you will benefit from the international context of this module in terms of content, examples and the experiences of your fellow-students. Working with experienced teachers in the field of sport management, you will encounter interactive and “fun” teaching styles that help aid your learning and understanding. You will be taught all about the key skills, roles and competences needed in today’s sport industry, such insights will then help give you that “cutting edge” when you apply for that dream sport job. The content of the module will be research-informed and applied and the assessment will reflect this focussing on key functions within sport management and the various international career opportunities that are involved within the subject discipline.
