SP7029 - Planning Professional Practice & Research

What will I learn on this module?

The taught module delivers learning on critiquing professional development practices, contextualising research within professional practice, developing and planning applied research, structured reflection for self-assessment, and the general planning of training and development.

How will I learn on this module?

Students will be provided with a research-rich, experiential, and enquiry-based educational experience that connects research excellence with practice and professional relevance. The module will be delivered using a blended learning approach with a combination of face-to-face, online and recorded (asynchronous) sessions delivered via the e-learning portal. Teaching will be delivered between January and May for students starting in January.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The module team will have both academic and practice expertise sufficient to advise students on the planning and execution of professional research and practice which has depth and complexity appropriate to the degree. For example, BPS Chartered and HCPC registered staff will be amongst the module team to ensure that training of sport and exercise psychology students is planned in line with BPS and HCPC requirements.
On this module, students will become part of a wider community of practice, whereby they will engage with academic staff within and out with their discipline, along with other doctoral students in their field and related fields. There will be opportunities in the seminar sessions for students to share good practice, gain formative verbal feedback on their plan of training and research proposal, engage in peer support, and develop professional networks for future working.
During the semester when the module is taught students will have regular meetings with their principal supervisor to further develop their doctoral training plan and ensure coherence and appropriateness of the planned training in relation to their required research and practice, and the content of the final thesis/portfolio. The module tutors will also offer weekly tutorial hours outside of the taught contact time, which students can book into if they require further support.
