What will I learn on this module?
On this module you will learn the fundamental principles of biology and chemistry required to provide the necessary background level of understanding for progression onto second year of study when the basic science is applied to forensic specialisms such as toxicology, trace evidence analysis and DNA profiling. Topics covered on this module will include:
• Anatomy and physiology
• Cell biology
• Genetics
• Fundamental chemistry principles
• Chemical extraction and sample preparation techniques
• Analytical techniques
How will I learn on this module?
Theoretical material will be delivered using a combination of traditional lectures, seminars, tutorials and in-class discussions.
The module will be split equally between biology theory and practice and chemistry theory and practice. The practical work carried in the laboratory sessions will embed the knowledge gained in lectures and tutorials to ensure a good level of understanding of the material covered. Technology enabled learning is used throughout this module to ensure that students have access to the required materials from a range of online sources including PC, laptop, tablets and mobile devices using the relevant software and apps.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will be supported through active participation and discussion during laboratory practical sessions. These offer a unique opportunity to fully understand the scientific theory underpinning the laboratory tests and the interpretation of your scientific findings.
All lecture and practical material will be available on the University’s eLearning Portal, supplemented with guidance on further reading relevant to the subjects.
Written assessment feedback will also be provided to allow you to understand how you performed and how you can build on this performance in subsequent assessments within your programme.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
• You will be expected to be able to understand and describe essential facts, concepts, principles, (processes) and theories in biology and chemistry topics that have an important application in forensic and analytical sciences.
How will I be assessed?
Formative assessment opportunities will be used throughout this module in the form of quizzes and tutorial tasks to allow you to monitor your progress. Tasks will be designed to prepare you for the summative assessment method used in this module.
Summative assessment will take the form of two multiple choice question exams MLO 1. One exam will be based on the biological content and the other on the chemical content of this module.

On this module you will learn about the fundamental principles of biology and chemistry required to provide the necessary background level of understanding for progression to your second year of study when the basic science is applied to forensic specialisms such as toxicology, trace evidence analysis and DNA profiling. You will be taught using a combination of traditional lectures, laboratory practical’s and tutorial sessions to assist your understanding of each key area of biology and chemistry covered and adequately prepare your for the assessments. The knowledge learnt on this module will provide a springboard for learning throughout the rest of your degree programme.
