What will I learn on this module?
This module provides you with an understanding of a broad range of assessment procedures related to exercise and health. You will first gain the fundamental knowledge required for health and exercise assessment in physiology, psychology and biomechanics. Building on this knowledge, you will gain an understanding of health screening and the different factors that can affect health in exercise to help with identifying appropriate assessments. During the module you will be taught various assessment procedures in all disciplines whilst being given the skills to understand their strengths and limitations. The module will also provide you with the skills on how to interpret assessment data, and also the skills to be able to synthesise assessment data over multiple disciplines to make overall conclusions.
How will I learn on this module?
The module will be taught through interactive lectures, which may include discussions and tasks, as well as practical laboratory workshops. Sessions will be delivered in a variety of formats in order to utilise the potential of each learning platform. You will be able to access materials in advance on the eLP to familiarise yourself with the content of each session. Core content will be delivered through lectures in an interactive format. Furthermore, to allow you to take a multi-disciplinary approach, staff will also facilitate more in-depth discussion of each topic using formats such as real-world scenarios or problem-based case studies to enable you to develop both your critical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify appropriate health assessments or interpret data. You will also be encouraged to engage in independent study, in particular the reading of current journal articles, or engaging in other formats (e.g. podcasts, websites) in order to further your knowledge in the area.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will be supported through a variety of means throughout the module. You will be provided with important module information during the introduction session. Information about session content and assessment will also be made available through the eLP. The module staff team will also be available to communicate through the eLP such as discussion boards or the messaging service. In addition to this, staff will be available during tutorial hours for individual support outside of timetabled hours. An assessment session will be provided during the module to afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions. During the module, you will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on your development. Further academic skills will be supported through the University Library services.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Understand the underpinnings of evidence-based assessments from scientific disciplines;
2. Interpret the outcome of a range of assessments in health and exercise contexts.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
3. Evaluate measurement and assessment techniques in an exercise and health context from a multidisciplinary approach.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
4. Identify factors associated with health that influence the decision or outcome of assessments in health and exercise.
How will I be assessed?
The summative assessment will be an examination (2 hours; 100%) which addresses all module learning out comes (KU 1,2; IPSA 3, PVA 4). Following an information briefing, you will be required to answer multiple choice questions and short answer questions based on the information briefing.
This assignment will assess your ability to understand exercise and health-based assessments in a range of disciplines and assess your ability to interpret the outcome of such assessments to make informed conclusions.
Formative Feedback
Formative assessment will be provided to you during practical workshops to help you develop and enhance your practical skills. You will also be provided formative feedback in the form of practice questions to assess your understanding.
Summative Feedback
You will receive written or audio feedback on your summative assessment to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial.

Module abstract
The Exercise and Health Assessment module provides you with the skills to understand and perform broad range of assessment procedures related to exercise and health. During this module you will be given the knowledge required for health and exercise assessment in physiology, psychology and biomechanics. You will be taught various assessment procedures in all disciplines whilst also learning the skills on how to interpret assessment data to make overall conclusions and determine an individual’s health profile. The module will be taught through lectures and practical workshops to give you hands on experience to enable you to develop your skills needed for careers in healthcare or the fitness industry.
