NS0533 - Values and Principles for Nursing People Across Their Life Span

What will I learn on this module?

During this module you will be introduced to a range of topic areas related to caring for people across their life span. Your learning will be underpinned by contemporary research and evidence based practice, in order to support you to understand the complex and unique needs of a range of people including children, adolescents, adults and the older person. The module will support you to appreciate the demographic trends related to Maltese and international populations and you will develop an understanding of the associated implications these factors may have for nursing practice in diverse practice settings including mental health and learning disability care settings. You will be supported to develop compassionate values and attitudes towards a person’s life span and understand the requirement to implement a holistic, person and family centred and individualised approach to caring for people as they age. The module will explore relevant issues and health challenges related to different stages of a person’s life span, and this will be founded on the following broad topic areas:
• Biological, psychological, sociological and spiritual aspects of ageing.
• Mental health and learning disability influences on care provision, relationship centred, holistic and individualised approaches to caring for the life span of a person
• Pathophysiology of ageing and its impact upon the health of an individual.
• Contemporary evidence-based nursing care management
• Assessment strategies to identify risk and promote safe approaches to nursing care.

How will I learn on this module?

During the module you will learn by a variety of teaching strategies. The module will use lectures to introduce key concepts, which will be explored further in seminars and through self-directed and tutor guided independent study. The module will draw on a range of teaching and learning activities, which aim to stimulate discussion and debate. There will also be interactive activities in the format of practical workshops, to enable you to apply knowledge to practice. Authentic case scenarios will be utilised to enhance your awareness of the unique and complex needs of the person. This will be supported by technology enabled directed activities and enquiry-based approaches to learning. Online supporting materials will be available to enhance your learning further. Your learning will be supported through interaction and engagement with lecturers and peers. You will work independently and in groups on structured activities drawing on electronic resources, to enable you to fully engage with and participate in subsequent face to face learning at MCAST or online in the virtual classroom.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be provided with academic support by the lecturers who teach on the module. Formative activities to feed into assessment for learning will be incorporated into the module delivery to assist you to develop your academic ability to complete the summative module assignment. You will be introduced to your assessment task at the start of the module and will receive an online group tutorial part way through the module. Your peers will also be able to offer support through seminar discussion and group work activities. Northumbria University offers an established student support service which can also offer some support to enhance your academic skills. For example, the online Skills Plus resource provides a useful platform to support many aspects of your learning, such as searching for literature, developing your skills in analysis and structuring your academic work.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

By the end of this module you will be able to:
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the global context of ageing, the biological impact of the ageing process, the pathophysiology of relevant disease processes and the associated evidence based nursing care management of people across their life span.
2. Appraise the holistic, unique, and complex physical, mental, social and emotional needs of a person at different stages in their life span.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of contemporary evidence based, person centred and relationship focused approaches to individualise nursing care.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
4. Analyse and apply evidence based approaches to caring for a person, within and across a range of health care contexts
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
5. Critically reflect on the significance of the values, attitudes and holistic approaches that nurses require, in order to deliver evidence based, individualised care for individuals at different stages of their life span.

How will I be assessed?

Formative Assessment:
You will be provided with opportunities to engage in formative assessment throughout the module. This will be facilitated by directed activities and small group work, on which you will receive constructive feedback from your peers and lecturers. These activities will enhance your understanding of the academic requirements of the summative assessment. (MLO 1, 3 &4)

Summative Assessment:
You will be required to develop a 2,500 word case study that examines the healthcare needs of an individual at a specific point in their life span. The assessment will be submitted electronically and your mark and written constructive feedback will also be received in this format. (MLO: 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5)

Module abstract

The knowledge you will gain on this module will support you to engage in holistic, person centred, relationship centred and individualised approaches to caring for people during different stages in their life span. You will learn about how the healthcare needs of an individual change as they age and how your skills and knowledge can help overcome the complexities of care delivery and support both physical and mental wellbeing. You will develop skills to aid you deliver evidence based nursing care across a range of healthcare setting using contemporary research results. Together with face to face teaching activity from academics who have expertise and passion for caring for a range of individuals across the life span, supplementary technology enabled resources will support your learning. The module aims to provide you with a comprehensive insight into a range of contemporary issues related to caring people of all ages and equip you with foundational skills to practice effectively and care for any person during their life with compassion. These skills and knowledge are essential to your future employment as a nurse
