What will I learn on this module?
Nursing Skills 2 will build on the concept of communication and safe and effective practice which you have been introduced to in the previous skills module. You will further develop your communication and clinical skills relevant to your practice placement experiences. You will continue to learn a range of skills, such as recognition of the deteriorating patient, that are necessary for safe, effective and professional practice. You will have the opportunity to participate in simulated education utilising a range of specialist technology, including human patient simulators, and taught by a specialist module team of lecturers in nursing, midwifery and health.
You will consider and develop your nursing skills, acting with integrity, applying the principles of The Code (NMC, 2018). You will demonstrate your ability to practise in a holistic, individualised, person centred, non-judgemental, caring and sensitive manner, acknowledging the diverse needs of a contemporary society. You will continue to develop your understanding of team working and its importance in nursing practice. You will learn about the importance of person-centred care and effective communication skills. These learning opportunities will continue to help you gather evidence of your abilities and confidence and will inform your attainment of communication and safe and effective practice as identified as Part 1 in your Ongoing Record of Achievement (ORA).
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through a variety of methods, which will include Online Supported Learning (OSL) resources contained within the BlackBoard Ultra site, and through engagement with a simulated practice environment to enable skills rehearsal. Learning will be supplemented by websites and training packages, which will include access to the department’s specialist Skills4Practice website: https://www.s4pwebsite.com/
Engagement in group workshops will encourage you to work collaboratively with peers to build your knowledge and understanding. This further enhances your understanding and skills of the task-work component of teamwork and reflects the realities of delivering effective care for people of all ages in healthcare settings, such as the community, people’s own homes and in-patient clinical setting.
The module will be delivered using a blended approach of face-to-face practical sessions underpinned by online learning resources contained within the BlackBoard Ultra site. The online learning resources will provide you with the theoretical underpinnings to evidence base your skills development. The focus of learning will be on rehearsal of nursing skills to build proficiency, develop understanding and enhance competence.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will be supported by a specialist module team of lecturers in nursing, midwifery and health. You will receive ongoing guidance and feedback to ensure you are able to engage with concepts of safe nursing practice, the physical health, mental health and wellbeing status of people of all ages, and the academic rigour of the module.
You will also be supported via the modules Online Supported Learning systems in addition to face-to-face teaching and group work activities and discussion. You will be able to contact the module team in person, by email or phone and through BlackBoard Ultra. Skills Plus, the University Library’s collection of online learning materials can be used to support the development of your academic skills. Further support for your learning is provided with a 24-hour IT Helpline and the student support and wellbeing service at Northumbria are excellent points of contact for assistance for queries regarding disability, faith, counselling, mental health support, finance and welfare issues. You can access these services via email on your student portal, by telephone or through the help desk staff based within university libraries.
You will also support each other via peer support, through engaging in discussion and debate to enhance your learning. Additional relevant materials will be available via BlackBoard Ultra. These will include the electronic reading list, PowerPoint presentations, recorded lectures and interactive learning packages. The University Libraries at both Coach Lane Campus and City Campus offer an extensive collection of material, both hard copy and electronic, access to international databases and training in information retrieval. All support will be in line with any Student Accessibility Plans (SAP’s).
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Develop your knowledge and understanding in relation to the communication skills that underpin the delivery of evidence-based nursing care.
Intellectual / Professional Skills & Abilities:
2. Develop communication skills that will enable you to participate effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary team and wider community, including the patient, their family and carers.
3. Develop a range of nursing intervention skills which will enable you to support patients using safe and effective practice.
4. Build on skills of self-reflection to improve your level of self-awareness to become a safe and effective practitioner.

How will I be assessed?
Formative Assessment:
You will reflect on your communication skills used during an episode of care in practice and bring your written reflections to a peer and academic led discussion. This activity will inform your summative assessment. (MLO’s 1,2,3,4 & 5).
Summative Assessment:
You will write a 2000-word essay where you will reflect on your communication skills during an episode of care in practice. Submission and feedback will be managed electronically through Turnitin.

Module abstract
Within this second skills module you will continue to develop the skills required to provide safe and effective professional practice. Your sessions will continue to focus on the rehearsal of a range of skills that support your learning in practice. You will be provided with opportunities to participate in simulated learning utilising a range of specialist technologies such as human patient simulators and National Health Service standard equipment. Emphasis will be given to the process of reflection and its contribution in your learning. Particular focus on communication skills will explore their importance in nursing interventions for safe and effective professional practice. As you progress through the module you will learn how to reflect on your own performance, use feedback and illustrate your development and growing confidence in your Ongoing Record of Achievement (ORA).
