What will I learn on this module?
This module is designed to provide you with the opportunity to undertake a tailored programme of professional development activities relevant to your own sport-related career interests and needs. In addition you will develop your knowledge and understanding of the value of professional development activities in enhancing employability within the sport industry. As part of the module you will also be encouraged to develop your critical reflection skills both in reflecting upon your own professional development and your awareness of the wider sport industry. Module content will be based around understanding the meaning of employability within the sport context, exploring professional development and work-based learning, and developing employability based skills such as action planning, reflection and interview skills to enhance your work readiness.
How will I learn on this module?
This module is focused on you gaining experience with the sport industry using a variety of professional development opportunities to suit your own needs; including, but not limited to: work-based experience, shadowing professionals, attending workshops/course/conferences, and careers events. Therefore much of the learning on this module takes place away from the classroom and out in the sport industry.
However to supplement this there are also a number of more traditional taught sessions which take place on the module to ensure that you are given the academic underpinning in areas such as employability, professional development and reflection. Students are also expected to use content from other modules on their programme to enhance your learning and encourage the application of theory to practice. In addition this will all be supported by a number of small group and 1-1 tutorials designed to support you as an individual in developing your career goals and aspirations
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Staff teaching on this module will be available for individualised, pre-booked meetings at specified times for students. During these meetings students will have the opportunity to gain support for (but not limited to) module content, feedback relating to formative and summative assessments as well as general enquiries and issues specific to the module.
In addition as this module has reduced taught sessions and the emphasis is on student completion of CPD activities, every student is allocated a supervisor who will be able to support you on a 1-1 basis both with the academic and applied elements of the module.
Additionally students will have access to a Discussion Board (found on the eLP for this module) where enquiries and issues relating to the module can be raised with module staff and student peers providing the necessary support across a general forum.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
