FA5027 - Fashion Concept to Product

What will I learn on this module?

In this Fashion Concept to Product module, you will develop and refine a key concept from block one into a technical pack for realisation. You will learn advanced design development techniques in 2D/3D to produce a detailed technical pack, including a design specification drawing and appropriate sampling. You will work in our fashion studios and technical workshops with specialist staff to transform your design into a professionally finished garment or fashion product relevant to your target consumer and in a fabrication appropriate for your concept proposal.

You will record the development of creative and technical skills in a process journal, making clear links to your exploration and application of human- or planet-centred design methods and principles. You will style and record your outcomes through photography or film to further communicate your journey from concept to product. You will also gain confidence in presenting your ideas to a variety of audiences through peer reviews, tutorials and, where appropriate, industry feedback. Your outcomes from this module will continue to prepare you for and build your portfolio content for applications for Design Placement, Design Study Abroad, or Creative Studio.

How will I learn on this module?

At the start of this module, you will be in the design studios, working with the academic team to develop your concept, considering human and planet-centred design principles in working towards presenting a finalised concept board, including a clear direction of design elements such as colour/print/fabrication. You will negotiate with the academic and technical team to select one key design idea from block one, Fashion Futures or Professional Practice Portfolio.

You will engage with specialist staff to systematically reflect, integrate feedback, and iterate for continual refinement and innovation. Following industry practice, you will use your tech pack to work in the design studios and workshops to acquire more advanced technical skills in pattern cutting, moulage, and garment construction by realising your design supported by the technical team.

You will also be expected to continue to develop your project work during self-directed study. You will be inducted into the workshops at each level. Once you feel confident, you can access technical workshops for directed study to develop your work and practice your skills between timetabled sessions. You can also book our fashion photography studio and equipment to creatively explore your ideas for photostyling.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Your module tutors will be your main source of support for your academic development. Through a mix of lectures, seminar discussions, practical workshops, and tutorials, they will provide you with the support you need to pass and succeed in each module.

At the outset of your module, you will receive a module briefing that will explain all learning outcomes and requirements. Crucially, it will also include a detailed timetable explaining the planned delivery of the module, workshops, and opportunities for support, including tutorials. You will meet your module tutors on a weekly basis.

During your modules, you will be expected to present work for feedback through group discussion with your peers, tutors, external collaborators, or stakeholders. You will also receive more individualised tutorial feedback prior to your submission to help improve your work.

In addition to your module tutors, you will be supported by various others and university services:

The Faculty provides a wide range of technical expertise to support your study. Technicians aligned with your modules will be able to provide technical instruction and demonstration of equipment and software required to complete your project work.

Library staff will provide induction sessions to introduce you to essential study skills, IT skills and information retrieval skills.

On live projects with external collaborators (or stakeholders), you may receive specific project feedback and professional career advice.

Visiting lecturers and professionals will give you greater contextual awareness and inspire you.

Academic Language Skills modules are available to help students at the Northumbria Campuses whose first language is not English or who have no experience studying in English in the UK.
