Restorative Just Culture - People Processes

Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University and Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust are proud to present this one-day digital virtual programme. The programme is for anyone involved in dealing with people processes when an adverse event or incident has occurred.

The programme is particularly aimed at Human Resources Staff, Staff Side Representatives, Line Managers/investigating officers, Freedom to speak up guardians’ and Senior Leaders.

Just cultures that are restorative as opposed to retributive are becoming increasingly recognised for their contribution in dealing with adverse events and significant incidents, managing employee relations, developing high performing teams, and enabling the delivery of safe and continuous care.

On the programme you will learn how to manage these issues in a restorative way that minimises negative impacts, maximises learning and develops an organisational culture where people feel safe, listened too, and respected.

Restorative Just Culture recognises the key role played in those areas by considering a system wide approach and asking:

  • Who is hurt; what do they need; and whose obligation is it to meet those needs?
  • Do our teams feel psychologically safe to speak out, take interpersonal risks and make decisions to provide the necessary care without fear of retribution or marginalisation?

On the programme, you will learn the theory behind a Restorative versus Retributive approach and the benefits of this approach including improved relationship management across your organisation, improved staff survey results, reduced grievance and disciplinary cases and increased motivation, which lead to higher levels of safe and continuous care.

The programme focusses on the Mersey Care Four Step process for dealing with incidents and adverse events, the wider application of a Restorative approach including capturing, sharing, and embedding the learning and partnership working in people practices.

You will participate in live expert speaker sessions and group sessions to work through case studies and access your own organisations approaches.

To be delivered virtually over MS Teams 9:30 – 5:00 (Participants join at 09.15hrs)

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • Support HR practitioners to develop the knowledge skills and behaviours required to apply a restorative just culture approach when handling employee resolution cases
  • Provide reassurance to staff side representatives that an RJC approach is beneficial to employees/their members and support the formation and strengthening of partnership working between staff side and HR.
  • Opportunity for freedom to speak up guardians to gain greater awareness in RJC practices soon to be adopted in their organisations.
  • Understand the theories and concepts that underpin the practices relating to a Restorative Just Culture and that contribute to safe levels of patient care.
  • Critically analyse the current approach to employee relation matters that have arisen from bullying, harassment, grievances, disciplinaries and/or other adverse events or serious incidents.
  • Facilitate participants confidence and learning in applying the Mersey Care Four Step Process to manage employees’ relations and adverse events.
