Biomathematics

Meet our staffThe focus of researchers in this area is on mathematical, statistical and computational models of processes and events in biology, physiology and medicine. The actual modelling and simulation of key biological structures is of interest to biologists, physiologists, epidemiologists and medical doctors but, at the same time, poses significant challenges from mathematics, statistics and computer science viewpoints.

One of the strengths of this research is in developing models of human health and wellbeing, such as mobility and optimal regimes for care, prevention and rehabilitation, models of cancer, chronic illness and in relation to the ageing process. Fractal analysis, time series analysis and longitudinal data analysis are used to study heart problems, diabetes and depression. Models of regulation of insulin and glucose and gene regulatory networks are studied with delay differential equations. We study multicellular systems with particular regard to the development of tumours in the intestinal system and, more precisely, colon rectal cancer. Another strength is the modelling of gene expression and gene regulation, and studies of biomarkers. Data mining, machine learning and statistical techniques are developed and applied to analyse large data sets in genomics and proteomics.

The research is partially funded by European FP7 project Models of Ageing and Technological Solutions for Improving and Enhancing the Quality of Life (MATSIQEL).
