About Northumbria Children and Young Peoples' Psychological Trainings suite of programmes:

The Children and Young People's Psychological Trainings programmes are the result of a national NHS project delivered in collaboration with universities across the UK & designed to restructure and transform mental health services for young people.

The programmes are evidence-based and have been created specifically to meet the needs of those using the services our practitioners work in for example, one of the most dominant therapies taught across the suite is low-intensity cognitive behavioural therapy.

The programmes available at Northumbria University include:

Delivered by experts in their field, and those who helped to write the national curriculum, the programmes are suited to a range of learners from those seeking to join the profession at entry level up to those who are actively working in children’s mental health and are looking to progress to the next level in terms of broadening the types of support they can offer, supervising and supporting others and delivering training to those in strategic roles to ensure they have high performing and effective teams.

The courses are delivered in a blended format with a combination of online and face-to-face teaching.

At Northumbria University, we are dedicated to developing a workforce that promotes resilience, prevention, and early intervention in services for children and young people. Our Enhanced Evidence-Based Practice Programme for the Children and Young Peoples' Improving Access to Psychological Therapy (CYP-IAPT) aims to transform mental health services for children and young people.

Programme Highlights:

Skill Enhancement: By the end of the programme, students will have enhanced their skills to:

  • Understand the core components of a successful CYPPT programme.
  • Demonstrate how these core components are incorporated into their work with children, young people, and families.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of children, young people, and families, considering elements of risk, development, and mental health diagnosis.
  • Carry out brief evidence-based interventions for anxiety disorders and depression in children and young people.
  • Use clinical supervision effectively and demonstrate evidence of self-reflection in their clinical work.

  • AC6682: Core Skills for CAMH Practice (20 credits)
  • AC6683: Enhanced Skills for Engagement & Assessment in CAMH Practice (20 credits)
  • AC6684: Enhancing Evidence-Based Interventions for Anxiety & Depression in CAMH Practice (20 credits)

Entry Requirements:

Employment with a Partner Service: Entry to the programme is through employment with a partner service, typically an NHS Trust, Local Authority, education institution, or third sector organisation.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Level 5: Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE), Foundation Degree, Higher National Diploma (HND), Level 5 Award, Level 5 Certificate, Level 5 Diploma, Level 5 NVQ. Level 5 qualifications can also serve as an access route for those without a degree.
  • Level 6: Degree Apprenticeship, Degree with Honours, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Level 6 Award, Level 6 NVQ, Ordinary Degree without Honours.

At Northumbria University the Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is part of a wider suite of training programmes designed to improve access to evidence-based psychological therapies for children, young people and their families. 

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which has a continually evolving and robust evidence base is recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as the treatment of choice for a range of mental health issues. Here at Northumbria University our Postgraduate Diploma in CBT is a progressive and professional 1year full time recruit-to-train programme which will give you the advanced skills and knowledge needed to practice as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist.

The programme has been developed in close alignment with the British Association for Cognitive and Behavioural Psychotherapy (BABCP) guidance and on successful completion, you will have a portfolio of evidence relating to your knowledge and competence development upon which you can apply for accreditation as an accredited practitioner with the BABCP.  During your time undertaking the programme you will be expected to adhere to the BABCP ethical standards for practice.

During the training period you will gain an understanding of key concepts and theories in CBT practice, evaluate different approaches to solving problems, and integrate theory and practice as you plan your future academic, professional and personal development. Our programme is delivered by highly committed and experienced CBT therapists, trainers, and supervisors, and is designed to train you in evidence based, innovative CBT approaches.  We pride ourselves in giving our trainees the best possible start to a vibrant and fulfilling career as a CBT therapist.

 

Overview of taught modules:

AC7005 - Core competency to work with children, young people, and families

This module focuses on theoretical understandings of child, adolescent, and family development. It will foster development of foundational knowledge and skills required to engage, communicate, and work effectively.

AC7006 - Therapeutic skills for work with children, young people, and families.

This module facilitates development of the knowledge and skills required to establish effective therapeutic relationships and alliances with children, young people, and their families. It also facilitates the ability to utilise appropriate assessment and outcome measures within clinical therapeutic work. Finally, it will promote the ability to make effective use of supervision.

AC7007 -  Assessment and formulation with children, young people, and families

This module is a key component contributing to your development as a CBT practitioner. The module develops your ability to carry out CBT assessment and formulation with children, young people, and families using a variety of approaches and assessment tools.

AC7003 - CBT for anxiety in children and young people

This module will facilitate a theoretical understanding of the nature of anxiety disorders in children and young people. It will support you in developing an understanding of the evidence base as well as developing your competence in the assessment and treatment of anxiety.

AC7004 - CBT for depression in children and young people

This module will facilitate a theoretical understanding of the nature of depression in children and young people. It will support you in developing an understanding of the evidence base as well as developing your competence in the assessment and treatment of depression.

 

Course components and requirements: 

At the end of the course you will be expected to demonstrate that you have achieved:

  • 200 CBT clinical therapy hours with children and young people.
  • 70 supervision hours (combined hours of university and practice-based supervision).
  • A minimum of 8 completed cases (assessment/formulation/intervention/relapse plan). Completed cases must be formed from a minimum of:
  • Combination of 3x Anxiety Disorder types + 1x Behavioural Activation and 1x Cognitive Depression case + 3 others of any disorder type.
  • Close ‘live’ supervision of practice.
  • Completed Core CBT and Specific CBT competencies (demonstrated via a Professional Portfolio of Practice).
  • Complete both academic and clinical assessments (this is a mixture of academic essays, case studies, and clinical videos (marked according to the Cognitive Therapy Rating Scale, CTS-R). 

 

Entry Requirements:

We welcome applicants who have existing skills and experience of supporting children and young people who have experienced/or are experiencing mental health difficulties.  This course is ideal for those working in the medical profession, social work, psychologists, counsellors, mental health nurses, psychotherapists, experienced low intensity practitioners, and others with experience and an interest in mental health.

Entry to the programme is directly through employment with a partner service, typically an NHS Trust, Local Authority, education institution, or third sector organisation.

  • An Honours degree (2:2 or above) or equivalent level 6 study. 
  • Applicants require experience working with both children and young people of at least a year.
  • Applicants need to have some training in mental health either through professional training or access to additional training courses.
  • Applicants who have previously undertaken an NHSE training course will need to have 2years post qualification experience to be eligible for further fund
