Why you wanted to go into this career and the path you took to achieve it:

I have always been fascinated by conservation, and with my background in chemistry it seemed natural to go down the more scientific route than object based conservation. Following my MA at Northumbria, I was successful in getting an internship with Icon and the National Trust for Scotland. At the end of my placement, I was able to get a job with English Heritage as Collections Conservator.

What are you doing now?

I am the conservator for English Heritage in Kent and Sussex. I am responsible for the preservation and care of over 100,000 historic objects, ranging from neolithic archaeology to Cold War technology, spread over numerous sites.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

It was a combination of offering the course I wanted to do, with the flexibility to continue working as I studied part time, and the distance learning aspect meant that I didn't need to relocate!

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

Doing the distance learning was a very useful experience. The lectures were available online in the form of powerpoints, and then there would be exercises for me to complete in my own time.

What impressed you most about our academic staff?

My tutor was always quick to respond to my emails, which was greatly appreciated, as I think I could have felt quite isolated if there hadn't been that link.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/give your career an edge?

I definitely couldn't be doing my job now without my degree from Northumbria.

What was the best thing about your course?

It was constantly interesting and challenging, and the feedback was always constructive and helpful.

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now throughout your career?

The theoretical knowledge has been invaluable.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words before coming to Northumbria?

Impulsive, curious, enthusiastic.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words after you graduated at Northumbria?

Confident, passionate, ambitious.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

The exposure to the knowledge of the lecturers, and the support for learning.

It's great, the support is wonderful and the courses are fantastic.

How would you describe your time at Northumbria in 3 words?

Challenging, enjoyable, worthwhile.
