Rachel Doyle

Student Rachel Doyle is looking to pursue a career in teaching English Literature after studying the subject at Northumbria.

After achieving higher grades than anticipated, Rachel decided to explore other options when it came to deciding which institution to study at. Originally, she had chosen a university close to home in Belfast, but realised after receiving her grades that doing better than expected was a great opportunity to look further afield.

Having already researched Northumbria University while originally applying for university, Rachel decided to come through the clearing process to study English Literature.

She said: “I came through clearing because I ended up getting better grades than I had been predicted, and I wasn’t happy with my original decision to study at home, so I decided to look at other options further afield. “I found the clearing process really smooth, the helpline was easy to use and the staff were really nice, which helped me feel less stressed and scared. I would advise other students who are going through the process to just relax and take all of the help that is available."

“It’s also really important to do your research in advance, sort out accommodation as soon as possible, and find out what sort of things you’d like to get involved in at University.” Speaking about her own university experience, Rachel also talks fondly of the extracurricular activities she has been involved in, including the tennis team. She said: “My favourite part of studying at Northumbria would probably be the Sports facilities – there’s a really good gym and swimming pool. I’m on the tennis team and have been involved in running the tennis club which has been a really good opportunity, and probably made my entire university experience because I made friends for life and had really fun nights out. I’ve also enjoyed living in the center of Newcastle, the people are really friendly up North!”

Rachel also found the teaching facilities on her course excellent, and the staff really helpful and accommodating, supporting her while she worked towards her degree. “On my course the teaching staff are brilliant, they’ve been really approachable and helpful with any assignments or issues that I’ve had. They’re very knowledgeable in their subject areas.” She said.

“I enjoyed the work on my course because I got to study lots of different types of literature, which I hadn’t done at school and which I really liked, and the staff are very helpful and approachable. “The facilities at Northumbria are really good. The library is the best I’ve seen out of all the universities I’ve visited. Northumbria has helped me to progress on to my career path by helping me build confidence with presentations. Now I want to be an English teacher, so I feel I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge in my subject and confidence speaking in front of people”
