Jack Grummitt

MSC International Sport Management

MSc International Sport Management _Student _Jack -GrummittWhere are you from?

The rural heart of South Lincolnshire

Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?

I've worked for Team Northumbria for three years and love it. However, I needed a masters to support my career aspirations, hence the degree.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

I love the people and the 'one-city' feel. Some of my favourite places are the Tyneside Cinema, Laing Art Gallery and Gosforth Park Racecourse.

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

I'm impressed at how genuinely pleasant and funny the people are, and I'm impressed at how Newcastle, despite being a small city, garners such a great reputation.

Did you find Northumbria University welcoming?  Was it easy to fit in?

Yes, the students are great and there's quite a variety of people.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?

The whole vibe and the focus on independent research.

Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?

My bosses at Team Northumbria have been constantly supportive of what I'm trying to do.

Have you joined any sports teams, clubs or been involved in any volunteer projects?  Tells us about the highlights?

Working in sport I get to interact with clubs every day. For people who are basically volunteers they do a massive amount of work. I love Sports Ball the most as I get to see them rewarded.

What is the best thing about your course?

The weird and wonderful mix of people on it.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

Actions will forever speak louder than words.

What do you want to do in the future?  What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?

I'd like to manage in some capacity as I think I understand people quite well. I have learnt so much on the business side - report writing being one instance - which will help me professionally.

Have you taken up any opportunities to travel with your current course/undertake field trips?  If so, please tell us about them.

Yes! The Sports Field Trip to Lausanne. Informative and fun - the best trip I've been on. Could have stayed there for twice the time we were there.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

Get yourself involved. Immerse yourself in the experience.

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

Having to interact with such an enormous group of people has most certainly taught me that you've got to be who you are. Unless you're not a very nice person. But in the main you've got to be yourself and people will generally respect it.

If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?

Man I'm knackered.

Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?

100%
