**In the interests of health and safety of students, staff and our partners, the University Executive has taken the decision that all classroom-based teaching and learning activity will be replaced by online programme delivery. As you will undoubtedly be aware, many other universities are taking a similar approach. This does depend on individual online capability and nature of the sessions. This module is commissioned by Health Education England as part of its continuing workforce development (CWD) portfolio. If you are interested in participating, please complete the application form and gain authorisation from your Line Manager and your Trust Training Coordinator.

As part of your application you will need to upload a copy of your completed study leave approval form. If you do not attach your approval form to your application or it is incomplete this will delay your application and may impact you being offered a place on the module. Are you interested in the psychological impact of physical disease? CBT is a proven technique that can be used to support service users who suffer psychological symptoms such as anxiety, panic and depression as a result of their physical disease. This bespoke module will enable you to learn techniques which involve adopting a curious questioning style to work collaboratively with service users to help them understand and address their problems.

CBT’s structured approach is time efficient and can be used in your everyday practice. The core CBT skills you will develop and practice throughout this module will enable you to apply ‘CBT first aid’ techniques to your service users and help them explore new ways of looking at the issues causing them distress. 

Please note, successful completion of this module does not allow you to become a cognitive behavioural therapist.

Designed by a multi-professional team including Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Midwives, Social Care Staff and Medical practitioners our range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is tailored towards individuals who are driving and enabling practice development in NHS North East.

Northumbria is the principal provider of nurse education in the North East of England and was named Nurse Education Provider of the Year (post-registration) for three consecutive years by Student Nursing Times.

We have excellent relationships with partner services in health, social care and social work and our range of CPD provision supports practitioners and managers to engage in professional learning and then examine how this can be integrated in the practice arena.


You will learn through a blended learning approach which will incorporate the use of the University’s interactive online eLearning Portal (eLP), lectures, discussions and workshops.  Technology enabled learning will be enhanced through your interaction with the eLP which will give you the flexibility to access the module materials and aids remotely.  The lectures will cover theories and concepts that will enable you to tackle a series of guided exercises.  Many of the exercises will ensure you co-construct knowledge collaboratively with your module peers during the workshops. 

The formative assessment for this module requires you to complete various exercises during the lectures and workshops.

Completion of the exercises will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Research and critically evaluate differing types of evidence; discussing with peers and teachers how relevant the evidence is to your own clinical practice.
  • Work collaboratively within a learning community; presenting information to your module peers in a variety of formats.

You will be encouraged to seek formative feedback from both module tutors and peers before the summative assessment date which gives you the opportunity to improve their evidence of learning through critical reflection and constructive criticism.

For the summative assessment you will be required to write a 2500 word critical exploration and evaluation of a case study that demonstrates your ability to contextualise the central components of CBT.

This course is based at our Coach Lane Campus where you will have access to cutting-edge facilities with technology embedded through all aspects of your CPD course.

This NHS Continuing Workforce Development module is for healthcare practitioners who want to help patients who suffer psychological symptoms as a result of their physical disease.

Contextualise the concepts and central components of CBT; applying that knowledge to case studies.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:

Enhance independent learning abilities required to develop skills in critically evaluating evidence and drawing conclusions about it usefulness to professional practice.

Draw upon IT skills to facilitate their professional development and communication strategies e.g. using a PowerPoint Presentation to present and justify their case study.

Provide a robust and well considered critical discussion to their peers in the context of wider theories and practice, during workshops and in their summative written case study.

Demonstrate and reinforce the characteristics of a Post Graduate Northumbria student.These will be evident as they show innovation in applying CBT concepts and theories to case studies, together with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to critically examine and interpret knowledge in the discipline.
