Crime and Criminology

Meet our staffAcademics in this area undertake research on a variety of crime-related issues ranging from policing and the police's use of forensic science and the ethics of forensic DNA technologies to race and crime. Research has been carried out on the use of cognitive behavioural programmes to reduce re-offending and the impact of creative and spiritual activities in prisons is also being investigated. The regulation and criminalisation of the sex industry has been examined while environmental crime has also been added to criminology research at Northumbria. Another research project has investigated urban policing, particularly in relation to how public agencies govern behaviour in urban public spaces, while a distinctive focus has been placed on lesbian, gay and bisexual police officers.
