Institute of Humanities

Welcome to the Institute of Humanities

The Institute of Humanities, based in the Department of Humanities, seeks to provide an intellectual home for all the Humanities research conducted across the University. The Institute exists physically as a dedicated set of interlinked spaces, and virtually as an ongoing conversation about how Humanities research can address the pressing issues of the modern world.

The Institute has set itself a number of critical objectives. We wish to contribute eloquently to debates about the value of the Humanities, so lending our voice to the current ‘Campaign for the Humanities’, and to promote increased public engagement with research in our disciplines. We wish to work co-operatively with Humanities researchers across Northumbria in meeting the evolving demands of funding bodies, especially the imperative for multi-disciplinary working. We wish to help catalyse new research projects in strategically important areas, especially ones that combine scholarly and creative elements. Finally, we will seek to convene meetings, exchanges and interactions between Northumbria academics and organizations wishing to enter into partnership with us.

All Humanities scholars and postgraduate students in the University are in principle members of the Institute. The Institute hosts seminars, small conferences and book launches, and can provide limited facilitation for larger events in other venues so long as these are associated with the work of the Institute. We would like to hear from anyone wishing to work or partner with us, or to propose new projects.

Let the conversation begin.

Professor Matthew Kelly

Director of the Institute of Humanities
