Knowledge Exchange

The Department of Humanities works in partnership with a broad range of stakeholders to support and grow the economic, social, cultural and intellectual capital of the region and beyond.

The Department of Humanities at Northumbria comprise world-class research teams in the fields of:

  • American Studies
  • English Language and Linguistics
  • Creative Writing
  • English Literature
  • History
  • Music

Working in the Humanities means exploring human relationships and uncovering the meanings behind particular texts and stories. It is therefore natural that our research teams combine academic excellence with a commitment to public engagement.

We work with a range of partners both nationally (e.g. the British Council;  Burberry; Environment Agency; Granta, the NHS; National Museum of Scotland; the Co-operative College; National Union of Students) and in our region (Newcastle City Council; Northumbrian Water; the Workers’ Educational Association North East; New Writing North; Newcastle Cathedral; Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums). We have made major contributions to larger events such as the ‘Being Human’ Festival of the Humanities and the Freedom City 2017 activities.

Our students are actively involved in public engagement and knowledge exchange. For instance, in our History programmes, second-year undergraduate undertake a group project that involves communicating findings to the wider public, e.g. through posters and exhibits. There are further opportunities to produce outward-facing work – from blogs to audio documentaries – in other History modules. English studies students work with a range of external organisations (eg. New Writing North, Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums). Moreover, our PhD students are involved in their own public activities, for instance running a ‘summer speaker series’ that for the past few years has been taking place at the Lit & Phil and the Mining Institute in Newcastle.

Our offer to external partners:
