Within this postgraduate Interior Architecture course, you will work in a critical and self-directed manner, developing personal and professional attitudes towards architecture and creative reuse. You will develop ownership of your investigations in design, theory, construction technology, environment, management and communication, benefiting from our established design studio culture and our student-centred approach to learning. You will work as part of a postgraduate community, sharing knowledge, techniques and replicating the way you work in architectural practice.

This innovative postgraduate course is unique in the country in that it allows Northumbria BA(Hons) Interior Architecture graduates, with a good degree to successfully attain exemption from ARB Part 1 of the Professional Examinations within the context of your existing specialist interior-based study combined with specific urban and architectural enquiry.

Aimed at assimilating you into the architectural profession, this course will equip you with the tools you need to respond flexibly to professional issues and possibilities. A comprehensive mix of advanced manual and digital design skills will enable you to present concepts through a wide variety of media.

The skills you will develop through this course reflect and support the attributes expected of a graduate, and are transferrable to a wide selection of alternative professional and academic pathways. In this respect, the programme embeds the key transferrable skills of autonomous learning, analytical methods, critical curiosity, social responsibility and communications skills into the curriculum.

As a student within the architecture department you will have full use of the design studio, specialist model making, rapid prototyping and IT workshops.

You will have access to professional plotting services to help you synthesise and apply your learning, supporting the creation of a personalised portfolio relevant to your future professional career and realisation through sophisticated 2D and 3D representation.

Through our Electronic Learning Platform (eLP) you will have access to project and assignment information and learning materials for each module of study. The course emphasises self-directed learning, critical thinking, and independent research to support your academic and personal development, set within a supportive yet academically rigorous learning studio culture.

This course will prepare you for the successful attainment of Architects Registration Board (ARB) Part 1 status, with the opportunity to progress within the architectural profession, further Masters level study (ARB Part 2) and a wide range of opportunities in a rapidly changing professional context.

We will equip you with a wide variety of skills in design, visualisation, communications, practice management and research. Our graduates have secured positions in a range of leading architecture and design practices, both regionally and nationally, as well as further study internationally. Our graduates are equipped to work within a range of creative fields, including architecture, interiors, exhibition design, set design, and visualisation as well as developing associated careers in design journalism, property development, project management and building conservation.

Who would this Course suit?

The only one of its kind in the UK, this ARB Accredited course will suit successful Northumbria BA(Hons) Interior Architecture graduates with the desire to develop a portfolio of architectural design work within an urban, architectural and building design context towards achieving Part I status. This course is ideally suited to successful and self-motivated Northumbria Interior Architecture graduates who wish to pursue a career in architecture, whilst maintaining their strong creative reuse knowledge, skills and expertise achieved within their undergraduate study.

Entry Requirements 2018/19

Standard Entry

Applicants should normally have:
A minimum of a 2:2 honours degree in BA (Hons) Interior Architecture at Northumbria University, including a pass in all level 5 and 6 modules (in compliance with ARB regulations), and a minimum of three months continuous associated professional practice.

International qualifications

If you have studied a non UK qualification, you can see how your qualifications compare to the standard entry criteria, by selecting the country that you received the qualification in, from our country pages. Visit www.northumbria.ac.uk/yourcountry

English Language requirements

International applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component (or approved equivalent*).

Integrated Architecture Project (Core, 30 Credits)

Within this module you will produce an architectural response to a set context that demonstrates a high level of skill and confidence in intuitive, creative and innovative design. You will have opportunity to demonstrate an integrated response to a design problem, encompassing design and management, technology, environment and spatial programme via an authentic design scenario within a complex urban setting. You will synthesis your creative knowledge to explore the architectural condition and produce a response that draws upon your studio and professional practice to respond to the needs of a client brief and its end user.
