What will I learn on this module?
This module aims to expose students to main concepts, frameworks and theoretical debates in innovation studies and innovation management and then enable them to apply these insights into rapidly changing contexts in digital markets. The module will develop your critical understanding of the broad impact of digital transformation on businesses, as well as challenges of implementing digital innovation within specific real-world contexts. You will build knowledge and skills necessary to identify elements of radical and incremental technological change and follow their effects on the emergence of digital markets and new market structures.
How will I learn on this module?
The module offers you a range of learning experiences through a carefully balanced mix of theory and context, key readings and hands-on case studies, lectures and student-led activities in weekly workshops. During the lectures, you will be exposed to different theoretical frameworks that will help you understand the nature of innovation in digital markets. This understanding will be further developed in the workshops, where you will apply theoretical understandings to current developments in the field so that you can fully appreciate the complexity and dynamism of innovation in digital markets.
The module has a supporting reading list. The reading list is a comprehensive repository or essential, recommended and additional reading to support your learning experience.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will be supported through the module’s Electronic Learning Portal that keeps module introduction, diverse teaching and learning materials and discussion boards where you can ask questions or contribute to collaborative activities. You will also be provided with key and suggested readings.
Your directed study will support the work in the face-to-face sessions. You are expected to familiarise with the material in advance of the workshops to successfully engage with the corresponding activities.
Independent learning time is set aside for learning activities, self-identified by you, to gain a deeper and broader knowledge of the subject. You may undertake further reading.
The continuous practical nature of the workshops means that tutor (formative) feedback will be received continuously. In-class evaluations and directed learning activity provide formative assessment .

Module abstract
Digital markets have become an essential element of economies and everyday life. With the help of both radical and incremental innovations, digital markets enable creation and exchange of value through, for example, smart products, online services and connected experiences. They also change the distribution of existing value in global economic systems by substituting or transforming traditional markets. While popular technological imaginaries describe ever increasing possibilities and removing constraints for all, in reality, digital innovations produce new and complicated market structures populated by entrepreneurial organisations as well as powerful, global corporations.
This module aims to empower students to use key insights from innovation studies and innovation management literatures for making sense of these broad, complex and ongoing transformations. You will be expected to actively engage with core module content, tutor-guided and student-led readings and research, and hands-on activities based on real-life contexts and case studies. These diverse learning experiences will better prepare you for an increasingly digital business environment by helping you acquire necessary knowledge, skills and awareness about digital innovations.
