Northumbria’s Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship is ideal for those who would like to develop the knowledge and skills required to become a competent manager and leader within the workplace.

This innovative degree apprenticeship meets the current and future needs of students and employers. Open to those both starting their career and those in established careers looking to move into a leadership role, the apprenticeship combines relevant on-the-job experience with up-to-date academic thinking and research-rich learning.

The Chartered Manager degree apprenticeship enables students to develop the business, management and leadership knowledge, professional skills and personal behaviours required to become a fully qualified Chartered Manager.

Much of the learning during the programme will be integrated into students day-to-day work, enabling them to make an impact from the start. An approach designed to make the best use of emerging leadership skills.

Students will graduate an independent thinker with the ability to apply knowledge to complex problems and identify appropriate solutions. They will be an effective communicator with the attitudes and skills to work constructively and sensitively in a range of environments.

For the duration of the course, students will also become an ‘Affiliate’ member of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and have access to a range of membership support and benefits.

Successful graduates will receive a dual award including a CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership and will have the opportunity to apply for CMI Chartered Manager (CMgr) status.

The Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship was developed in collaboration with representatives from employers, the Chartered Association of Business Schools and the Chartered Management Institute.

  • Leadership for Responsible Change

Research skills are a core element of the learning process. Research tutored and research-led activities are embedded in each module through a mixture of directed learning activities in workshops and seminars.

During the apprenticeship, there are no examinations. Instead, there is a range of assessments including; reports, presentations, business case analysis, drafting policies, and a major project. All assessments are designed around the workplace to enable apprentices to relate academic theory and knowledge directly to their current role and organisation.

University-based learning is delivered by a team of academics who draw on their professional and academic specialisms to support learning. 

University learning will comprise of classroom and online activities including tutor-led interactive workshops designed to deliver practical skills and industry knowledge to support professional development. The university will provide students with a professional coach to support their learning, who they will meet with their workplace mentor on a quarterly basis to bridge the gap between work and study.

The programme sits within Northumbria’s Newcastle Business School, which has a global reputation for delivering some of the best business management education in the UK.  We are part of an elite group of less than 1% of business schools worldwide with double accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) in business and accounting.

University study will make-up 20% of the apprentice’s weekly learning and timely face-to-face contact will be essential.  Attendance at tutor-led sessions is very important, however as employees, we appreciate apprentices may unavoidably miss an occasionally taught class, therefore, all learning and teaching materials will be available via a virtual classroom and accessible to students remotely. Students will also be allocated an academic coach who will provide support in respect of academic development.

Whilst on campus, students will have access to the University’s exceptional facilities including social spaces, IT facilities and lecture theatres and not forgetting 24/7 access to our award winner University Library.

In partnership with Northumbria University, the organisation will support the learner at work to achieve their apprenticeship. Whilst studying the apprentice will be required to work full-time, for at least 30 hours a week, and will be supported through learning at work to achieve the requirements of the apprenticeship standard.

Both Apprentice and their Line Manager will be supported by Northumbria University throughout the programme, including access to online support materials for line managers. Apprentices will also meet with their own manager/mentor and individual professional development coach in the workplace at least four times each year.

During the programme, many assessments are work-based and aligned to the context and activity of the organisation, leading to increased organisational understanding and performance by the apprentice whilst ensuring they develop new skills and enhance productivity and business performance.

In order to complete the programme, the learner will have to demonstrate that they have obtained the relevant skills, knowledge and behaviour required during their workplace training.

Whilst off-campus and in the workplace, students will have access to our technology-enhanced learning (TEL) facilities which provide access to module information, electronic reading lists and online learning resources such as podcasts, e-books and e-journals.

The employer covers all tuition fees for the apprentice, the total payment required depends on the organisation’s apprenticeship levy status.

Students studying an apprenticeship do not pay any tuition fees, however, as they are in full-time employment they do not have student status and therefore are not entitled to apply for student finance.

Entry Requirements 2019/20

Standard Entry

Applicants should be employees or have access to organisational experience in order to enable them to apply theoretical concepts to their personal and professional experience.

The ability to benefit from Northumbria University programmes is assessed on a combination of academic and personal qualities which can be demonstrated in a number of ways.  Successful completion of a GCE or VCE Advanced level course of study (or some other equivalent qualification) is just one way.  Students who can in other ways demonstrate their ability to benefit from a Northumbria University programme, in particular mature students without formal qualifications will always be considered and are invited to contact the admissions tutor to discuss their application.

Applicants should use the personal statement on their application to illustrate their abilities, aptitudes, skills, qualifications and experiences which might be taken into account as well as or instead of any of the formal qualifications listed below.  It is University policy to recognise a wide variety of evidence, and potential applicants may wish to discuss this aspect of their application with the admission tutor.

GCSE Requirements:
A good GCSE profile is expected including Maths and English Language at minimum grade C or equivalent.  If you have studied for a new GCSE for which you will be awarded a numerical grade then you will need to achieve a minimum grade 4.

UCAS Tariff Points:
120 UCAS Tariff points including one or more of the following:

GCE and VCE Advanced Level:
From at least 2 GCE/VCE A Levels

Edexcel/BTEC National Extended Diploma:
Distinction, Distinction, Merit

Scottish Highers:
BBBCC - BBBBC at Higher level, CCC - BCC at Advanced Higher

Irish Highers:
BBBBB  - ABBBB

IB Diploma:
120 UCAS Tariff points including minimum score of 4 in at least three subjects at Higher level

Access to HE Diploma:
Award of full Access to HE Diploma including 18 credits at Distinction and 27 at Merit

Qualification combinations:
The University welcomes applications from students studying qualifications from different qualification types - for example A level and a BTEC qualification in combination, and if you are made an offer you will be asked to achieve UCAS Tariff points from all of the qualifications you are studying at level 3.  Should the course you wish to study have a subject specific requirement then you must also meet this requirement, usually from GCE A level or equivalent.
