Enterprise and Engagement

The Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Health has an excellent reputation for being responsive to the needs of the market. By using the diverse range of expertise of our staff, we inform the generation of new knowledge and provide development opportunities for professionals across the spectrum of healthcare delivery, education and policy.

The programmes in the department have received several national awards including Nurse Education Provider of the Year for our post-registration programmes in 2012, 2013 and 2014 in the Student Nursing Times Awards. We were delighted with these awards because they were voted for by our students. We have an excellent graduate employment rate with over 96% of graduates going on to work or further student within six months of graduating. The programmes are available at Undergraduate, Masters and Doctorate level and are aimed at developing practice, developing individuals and driving and enabling professional and workforce development in the NHS, voluntary and independent sectors.

Enterprise and Engagement activities occur through a variety of approaches such as contract research, consultancy, Continuing Professional Development (CPD), short courses and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP). All of our academics have expertise in clinical practice. We have a track record of being responsive to stakeholder requirements and can plan, design and deliver bespoke educational activity such as short courses, modules, programmes, workshops and masterclasses. Some examples are offered below:

Programmes, short courses and Masterclasses

We have an excellent history of responding to workforce development challenges and a track record of being responsive to stakeholder requirements. We can plan, design and deliver bespoke educational activity such as short courses, modules, programmes, workshops and masterclasses, both accredited and non-accredited. We have a broad portfolio; some examples include:

BSc / MSc Leadership and Management Health and Social Care

Bespoke educational provision designed in collaboration with Regional Hospitals and delivered in conjunction with the Business School at NU to develop the contributions of health professionals as leaders within the National Health Service.

Advanced Practice Programmes

We offer a range of programmes that have been developed in collaboration with partners aimed at meeting the needs of their changing workforce requirements, including:

  • Master of Clinical Practice (Advanced Critical Care Practice)
  • Master of Advanced Paediatric Practice (Advanced Paediatric Critical Care Practice)
  • Master of Advanced Paramedic Practice (Urgent Care)

Simulation-Based Education

We offer a range of simulation-based education programmes including a one or two-day introductory masterclass to a two-week bespoke programme. For example, a two-week intensive course for experienced nurse educators was developed for the Ministry of Health in Thailand.

We also offer ten-week modules that can be studied at either a Degree or Masters level, which are aimed at providing participants with the opportunity to study simulation-based education as a learning and teaching methodology exploring scenario design, delivery of scenarios and simulation sessions, debriefing, and patient safety strategies.

Human Factors

We offer a range of human factors programmes that range from a one-day masterclass to a ten-week module at Masters level aimed at providing students with the opportunity to study human factors as applied to the healthcare settings, exploring non-technical skills and how they impact safety and the provision of patient care.

End of Life Care

Strong partnerships with the National Council of Palliative Care. Collaboration with Regional Hospices developing research capacity and responding to the challenge of developing the workforce in this specialist sector through the design and delivery of bespoke activity.

Urgent and Unplanned Care

Strong partnership working in Emergency care working with Great North Air Ambulance and North East Ambulance Service to build capacity and resilience and respond to the challenges posed by the changing landscape of the NHS.

Primary Care

Developing capacity and resilience in primary care through the design and delivery of bespoke activity in partnership with commissioners and service providers.

International partnerships

We have a long-standing relationship with Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and have provided a teaching programme based on twice yearly masterclass / non accredited sessions over two weeks for nursing students based in Shanghai. The success of this programme has now continued and has been developed into a bespoke accredited two year long certificate programme for nursing students aimed at meeting some of the health care challenges faced in modern China.

Contract Research

Gateshead Care Home Programme

Working in response to the requirements of the Gateshead Care Home NHS Vanguard project, (a joint initiative by NHS Newcastle Gateshead CCG and Gateshead Council) researchers from the Ageing, Later Life and Long Term Conditions research theme are conducting several studies. These include exploration of the service delivery model, workforce requirements for an ageing population, evaluating practices to improve hydration in care homes, and evaluating the implementation of NEWS in care homes. These studies address key issues that are central to the new models of care transformation programme. The approaches combine a range of methodologies, ensuring that the outcomes are of direct relevance to understanding the processes and outcomes of the changes to the service delivery model that is being developed in Gateshead, and importantly inform future developments.

Evaluation of education, training and workforce development initiatives

Members of the Healthcare Education and Learning for Practice research theme are highly responsive to the needs of external stakeholders. We adopt a collaborative approach to scoping and agreeing solutions which are fit for purpose and have added value. For example, working in collaboration with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust who wished to evaluate an education initiative for Health Visitors who deal with children with complex needs we were able to provide contract research which had added value. Rather than undertake a unidimensional project (i.e. the traditional before and after approach) a piece of evaluative research was developed which combined evaluation techniques with a more in-depth theoretically based component. This approach allowed analysis and findings which were transferable beyond the single initiative, and enabled greater understanding of a range of latent and evident mechanisms at play and also unintended consequences.

Creative Ageing: Falling on your Feet: a Dance for Health Programme for Older Adults

We work with older people and creative, cultural, community and voluntary partners to design, deliver and evaluate innovative projects, to promote self-ownership and positive, healthy, later life. Building on the evidence base for positive health outcomes of arts participation, one approach is to work with professional artists to design and manage art programmes that seek to strengthen services and supports and reduce longer term health care costs. For example our qualitative evaluation of Helix Arts production company, “Falling on your Feet” (FoyF), Newcastle Gateshead Clinical Commissioning Group funded and piloted, a regular dance for health programme, for people aged 65 and over and living independently, focused on combating social isolation and related falls and fear of falling. Participants valued working with a professional artist to co-choreograph and perform dance, one commenting, no longer feeling defined, ‘just through age’.

Workforce development in perinatal care

In response to local and national expectations concerning perinatal mental health and greater service user involvement the midwifery team collaborated with local service users to develop an online blended learning activity to enhance student midwives appreciation of perinatal mental health issues. The blended learning activity has received a positive evaluation for its contribution to workforce development.

Knowledge Transfer Partner Projects

Corbridge Medical Group KTP – This project aimed to develop a General Practice service delivery model informed by data mining to redesign processes and workforce focus. Processes and procedures were developed through the KTP that enables use of General Practice information systems to identify consultation behaviour and the associated workload. This new business intelligence capability demonstrates the potential for clinical information systems to be used very differently, and for contemporaneous data to be used to inform the way that primary care is delivered.

North Tyneside Council KTP – This project aimed to optimise the health and wellbeing of older people through a range of preventative and reablement strategies in order to promote ageing in place. This project capitalised on a £320 million investment by North Tyneside Council in older people’s sheltered and extra-care housing and associated infrastructure. The project facilitated integrated working across Housing, Adult Social Care and Healthcare, improving access to services and quality of life of the older population.
