SP3009 - Sport Foundation Year Project

What will I learn on this module?

This module is designed to build on the academic skills you developed in the Essential Skills for Studying Sport module. In particular, this module provides you with the opportunity to further enhance your writing, logical thinking and research skills. You will use this module to identify and explore key areas linked to sport and your future undergraduate sport programme of study using an evidence-based learning approach. This module will be centred on real-world examples, where you will examine an existing sport related project/case study. The project will be examined from a multi-disciplinary perspective (i.e., aligned to sports coaching, sport science and sport management,) allowing you to understand the complex and integrated nature of sport.

How will I learn on this module?

The taught content will be delivered and provided in a variety of formats, and you will be able to access materials on the eLP module site. The module is taught via lectures where we will consider theory and research findings on a wide range of sporting topics which will be led by subject specific staff. There will be the opportunity to work in smaller groups with discipline specific members of staff who will facilitate context driven discussion and learning. Tutorials will be used for drop-in sessions to support your practical learning and there will be specific seminars and tutorials to guide your assessment. You will also be set independent tasks informed by key literature to complete outside of class time to further develop your understanding of the taught content.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the eLP module site. Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. You will be provided with content verbally and guided through tasks during timetabled sessions. A dedicated assessment session will afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions in class. The Module Leader is there to support you with any queries that you may have about the module content, and all staff members provide tutorial time outside of class time. Module tutors will provide you with the necessary information on how to arrange a tutorial. You will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on your development during the module, and you will receive feedback on summative work to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial. There are also further academic skills support available from the University Library services where you can gain access to study skills / academic writing and support materials, as well as links to booking both on and off campus study skills sessions.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed via a written report (1500 words) (100%, LO 1, 2, 3) that will address a taught case study.

Opportunities for formative assessment and feedback on report writing skills will be provided in seminars and workshops.

Summative Feedback
You will receive written or audio feedback on your summative assessment to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial.

Module abstract

This module is designed to develop your understanding of sports projects/case studies that require a diverse and multidisciplinary sports team in order to run and/or operate. Embedded within this module is the opportunity to learn from sport industry practitioners who will provide insights into their industry. The topics covered in these lectures will provide you with some key case studies and problems that may arise in the field of sport. The assessment will require you to address one case study/problem and provide an appropriate, evidence-based solution.
