KB7042 - Thermo-Mechanical Energy Conversion Systems

What will I learn on this module?

You will learn about technologies for the utilisation of renewable and sustainable energy sources for heat and power production using heat engines and other types of converters, such as: Solar, biomass, hydrogen and waste thermal energy resources, internal and external combustion engines, solar thermal energy, geothermal and hydrogen technology. You will explore energy conversion system theory and their application through practical classes where you will also be able to develop skills important to your future engineering practice.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn theories and related concepts via lectures, seminars and workshops. Seminar sessions and laboratory work provide an interactive learning environment, where you will integrate theory, practice and skill development. Assessment will offer learning opportunities both formatively through discussion and verbal feedback and summatively through individual written feedback on both assessments.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Direct contact with the tutors will provide you with direct support both in class and through the eLearning portal. In addition the Department’s guidance tutor and open door policies will offer you the opportunity to develop professional methods of engaging with support which will assist you as you progress in your career as an engineer. Additional support is provided via the eLP and Student Central.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

What will I be expected to achieve?

You will be able to:

Knowledge & Understanding:
MLO1. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of knowledge which is at the forefront of different types of renewable and sustainable energy sources and the engineering methods for their utilisation for heat and power production.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
MLO2. Critically perform advanced calculations for the conceptual design of various energy converters.
MLO3. Critically apply theories to the investigation of renewable and sustainable energy thermo-mechanical converter design problems using relevant software tools.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
MLO4. Demonstrate increase awareness of the environmental impact of the development of high performance renewable and sustainable energy solutions.

How will I be assessed?

Summative Assessments

1. Coursework (50%, 3000 words or equivalent).assessing MLOs 1, 2 & 3

2. Examination (50%, 2hr) assessing MLOs 1, 2 & 4.

Individual written feedback will be given on all summative assessments within 20 working days of submission.

Formative Assessments

Formative verbal feedback will be given on all learning outcomes during the seminar and laboratory sessions. Discussion with the tutors and reflection on your performance will allow you to continuously monitor your performance and feed this forward for improvement.
