EF0301 - Listening Skills (ESF)

What will I learn on this module?

This module will focus on developing your listening skills through exposure to live lectures similar to those you will experience on your target academic degree programme in the UK. The listening content will be based on various global issues, and will help you to identify structure and language so you can understand meaning through context. The classes will help you develop the tools that you will need to function on your chosen degree programme, such as note-taking, use of the eLearning Portal to develop your listening skills independently, and using peer-to-peer strategies to check your understanding both prior to and following live lectures.

How will I learn on this module?

The learning and teaching approaches on this module will mirror the experience you will expect to have on your target degree programme. Live lectures will be preceded by ‘pre-lecture’ classes, which will help you to prepare for content and vocabulary that you might expect. The lectures themselves will be delivered live and will allow you to experience a variety of speakers in a controlled environment designed to improve your listening skills for undergraduate study. You will also attend seminars, in which your tutors will check your understanding of the lectures, and highlight language used within the lectures that can help you to identify the key points. These seminars will also foster independent learning through working with your peers to collectively prepare for and check understanding of lectures, skills which will be important once you are on your chosen degree programme.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

All materials to help you prepare will be available on the eLP site.
Additionally, lectures will be recorded via Panopto and made available on the eLP for you to listen to again.
You will have access to Language Labs and Pronounce pronunciation software to improve your listening and speaking skills.

How will I be assessed?

Your listening skills are assessed in the Listening exam which takes place in the last teaching week of the course. This is done through a range of listening tasks, all based on the notes you take in the course of a normal lecture. These include short-answer questions, filling blanks in a table or diagram and writing up an extended version of a particular section of the lecture notes. There will also be a practice (mock) Listening exam, which is not formally assessed and is usually conducted in Week 8, to allow you to attempt the tasks under exam conditions.

Your speaking grade will be based on continuous speaking assessment, which includes assessing your active participation in in-class discussion, presentations, and your communicative ability in English.
