The BBC

Introduction

The BBC is the world's leading public service broadcaster. Its mission is to enrich people's lives with programmes that inform, educate and entertain. With the internet providing a universal platform for radio, the BBC was curious as to how you could use these ‘connected capabilities‘ to promote their own brand.

Design Opportunity:

What can a multidisciplinary group teach the BBC about the possible futures for Radio?

The opportunity was in using multidisciplinary thinking to increasing static listening figures of the younger generation, building future brand loyalty and exploring opportunities for commercial radio partnerships..

The Project:

In teams of two to three the MDI cohort conducted in-depth research on the BBC brand, their current technology capabilities, future capabilities, T.V. license fees (which funds BBC Radio), commercial radio and the human machine interface. Posters displaying key insights and imagery were produced for each of the research areas, arming the students with a collective knowledge. The highly visual workstations helped the students to conceptualise, inspire and stimulate a range of possibilities.

The Result:

The students produced an illustrated bound document, discussing each territory in terms of; discovery, unanswered questions, insights, futures and concluded with a series of provocative ‘What if?‘ concepts.

“It has been a genuinely rewarding experience engaging with Northumbnia University's MDI group. Their enthusiasm, thoughtfulness and creative insight has been inspiring, I look fomlard to continuing our relationship!”
