SP7006 - SER PG Project

What will I learn on this module?

This module provides you with the opportunity for independent study in an area of relevance to your degree. You are expected to use skills and knowledge acquired in modules as the basis for an in depth investigation of specific issues in the discipline. The aim of this module is to provide you with the opportunity to carry out an extensive, empirical investigation related to a topic of your own choice, where you will develop skills in communication, critical thinking and independent enquiry.

How will I learn on this module?

For the majority of this module you will partake in independent study, with hours allocated for practical work in the form of data collection and analysis. A small number of lectures, in combination with group seminars and individual tutorials are provided to help you during the completion of your project. You will be introduced to the project within the first semester of study during your final year; this will enable you to consider potential topic areas alongside your studies.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the eLP. Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. At the beginning of the second semester you will be allocated a project supervisor on the basis of an initial proposal idea and timetable that you are directed to complete. A research methods tutor will also be available for help and guidance. Your supervisor will be an appropriate member of staff from the Department of Sport, Exercise, and Rehabilitation (DSER). Individual one-to-one tutorials with these tutors during the second and third semesters will be used to support you in the development and progress of your project, whilst group tutorials may be used to facilitate discussion between all students and enable peer support. E-mail communication will supplement these tutorials, according to your needs.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

How will I be assessed?

With support from your supervisor, you will identify an appropriate journal for your project and format the paper as per the author guidelines (up to a maximum of 10000 words). The paper will be supplemented by a one side letter to the editor that will identify the relevance and novelty of the study.

Formative Feedback
You will receive ongoing formative feedback in one-to-one tutorials with your allocated supervisor for the duration of the module.

Summative Feedback
You will receive written or audio feedback on your summative assessment to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial.
