NX0478 - Masters' Study Abroad

You will be supported by teaching and learning plans provided for the subjects studied by the partner institution.

Directed learning will centre upon a range of activities including pre-reading, preparation for interactive activities and use of the discussion board on the e-learning platform.

Independent learning will centre upon you identifying and pursuing areas of interest in relation to the subject area or by providing deeper/broader knowledge and understanding of the subject through a range of learning activities that might include extended reading, reflection, research etc.

Critical reflection on knowledge, experience and practice underpins the learning and teaching philosophy along with the explicit development of competence.

The directed learning, independent learning and critical reflection will be undertaken in response to the modules of study provided to you by the partner but also in the context of the additional and wider international learning experience afforded by the semester of study abroad, reflection on which is key to the summative assessment for the module.

You will be supported in finding a study abroad opportunity by the NBS Study Abroad team and the Year 2 MSc Programme Coordinator who will match your programme requirements and study interests to a placement with a School partner institution. Like all students studying abroad, you will be provided with academic support by members of academic staff at the partner institution, as well as by Year 2 MSc Programme Coordinator who will act as module tutor for this particular module.

You will also be supported by a Northumbria e-learning portal that will support particular guidance around the summative assessment for the module that will be submitted to Northumbria on completion of the study abroad semester.

You will undertake all work at the partner institution including all summative assessment for the 60 UK credits (or 30 ECTS) of taught study.

In addition to the above, you will undertake a summative assessment for this Study Abroad module in the form of a 4000 word reflective portfolio. This will be focussed on the development of the student from the perspective of additional skills development, engagement in further self-development from the perspective of a broader international context and further demonstration of cultural and ethical awareness through the additional experiences gained by working in cultural diverse groups and teams but in a different international context. This assessment will be in addition to any of the assessment or work expected of the students from the partner institution providing the Study Abroad Opportunity. This will assess MLO1, MLO2 and MLO3.

The module will seek approval by the Faculty Student Learning and Experience Committee(s) that this assessment is exempt from the anonymous marking process given the reflective and personal nature of the summative assessment put in place.

This module records and assesses your academic progress and performance by undertaking a semester of academic study abroad as part of your two-year Masters’ programme. On this semester abroad you will:

• Undertake a study programme that will last one at least one semester in duration.

• You will attend all mandatory classes.

• You will undertake normal module assessments required by the host institution.

• You will study subjects approved by the NBS Study Abroad Programme Leader. Subject areas may be in any business discipline, foreign language, culture or politics.

In addition to the above, the summative assessment for this module is a 4000 word reflective portfolio which is focussed on your development from the perspective of additional skills development, engagement in further self-development from the perspective of a broader international context and further demonstration of cultural and ethical awareness through broader experience of working in a cultural diverse groups and teams.
