What will I learn on this module?

You will learn about the use of ‘Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for Long Term Conditions (LTCs)’ as a possible treatment strategy in Monitoring and Management of LTCs. As you explore the evidence base and key components of CBT you will develop theoretical knowledge and an understanding of the benefits of adopting this technique with your service users. Topics include:
• Long Term Conditions and Mental Health
• Why CBT - an introduction to using CBT with service users who have physical health conditions
• CBT for Anxiety and Panic
• CBT for Depression
• Therapeutic assessment skills – a central component in CBT
• Using guided discovery
• Formulation – a framework for solving problems
• Treatment goals and treatment strategies – tailored to target the psychological aspects of physical disease

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a blended learning approach which will incorporate the use of the University’s interactive online eLearning Portal (eLP), lectures, discussions and workshops. Technology enabled learning will be enhanced through your interaction with the eLP which will give you the flexibility to access the module materials and aids remotely. The lectures will cover theories and concepts that will enable you to tackle a series of guided exercises. Many of the exercises will ensure you co-construct knowledge collaboratively with your module peers during the workshops. You will be required to actively engage in research rich learning through an enquiry based approach to ensure authentic learning.

How will I learn on this module?

1. Contextualise the concepts and central components of CBT; applying that knowledge to case studies.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
2. Enhance independent learning abilities required to develop skills in critically evaluating evidence and drawing conclusions about it usefulness to professional practice.
3. Draw upon IT skills to facilitate their professional development and communication strategies e.g. using a PowerPoint Presentation to present and justify their case study.
4. Provide a robust and well considered critical discussion to their peers in the context of wider theories and practice, during workshops and in their summative written case study.

5. Demonstrate and reinforce the characteristics of a Post Graduate Northumbria student. How will I be assessed?

MLO’s 1 -5 will be addressed formatively and summatively.

The formative assessment for this module requires the student to complete various exercises during the lectures and workshops.
Completion of the exercises will demonstrate the ability to:
• Research and critically evaluate differing types of evidence; discussing with peers and teachers how relevant the evidence is to their own clinical practice.
• Work collaboratively within a learning community; presenting information to your module peers in a variety of formats.

The student will be encouraged to seek formative feedback from both module tutors and peers before the summative assessment date which presents them with the opportunity to improve their evidence of learning through critical reflection and constructive criticism.

The summative assessment for this module requires the student to write a 3000 word critical exploration and evaluation of a case study that demonstrates their ability to contextualise the central components of CBT.
