AF7017 - Econometric Modelling

What will I learn on this module?

This module will provide you with an understanding of the basic tools of econometrics, with emphasis on techniques and the interpretation of results. It will start with a review of probability and distribution theory, statistical hypotheses testing, and estimation and inference in classical linear regression models. This content will be followed by selected topics in applied econometrics, with a focus on connecting theory with practical application. The lectures will be supported by computer classes using secondary data to explore the various estimation techniques. The module will introduce you to the use of econometrics software packages. At the end of this module, you will be acquainted with a wide range of topics in modern econometrics, which are vital for doing and understanding empirical work. This will be useful to you in empirical work in any field of economics as well as many disciplines outside of economics.

How will I learn on this module?

In this module, you will be supported by a teaching and learning plan (TLP), which specifies lectures and computer workshops as well as tutor-directed study and independent reading. The lectures and seminars will cover the theoretical aspects of econometrics alongside the computer workshops which will demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of modern advanced econometrics. Workshops will also be used to provide clarity or further discuss aspects of the lectures that you may have questions on. You will have the opportunity to interact with the tutor and benefit from questions or discussions from other students in your class.



The computer classes will be based on data from recent empirical studies published in reputable journals. This will deepen your understanding of the theoretical components of econometrics that you will be taught during lectures and provides the opportunity to critically evaluate the techniques learned. In the computer workshops, you will use econometrics software packages for estimations and analyses, and this will be preceded by introductory lectures in econometrics software packages.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported in the module by an e-learning module site, which will provide materials for lectures, computer workshops and other relevant readings for your independent study. You will be supported by the lecturer by delivering the content of the lectures, providing answers to your questions about the materials, and practical guide during computer workshops. You will have access to the computer laboratory to practice at your own pace the econometric techniques/methods that will be taught during lectures and workshops. Schedules will be available for office hours with the teaching teams which will give you the opportunity to discuss or ask questions about this module. In addition, you can contact the lecturer via email outside the scheduled sessions for clarity on any aspects of the lectures.

How will I be assessed?

Formative Assessment:



The formative assessment will comprise of discussion questions and problem sets which will be distributed to you in advance. There will be individual and group discussion of the answers to these problem sets and questions during the workshops. One on one feedback will also be provided to students on problem sets and questions. This will encourage your active participation in the learning process throughout the semester. The e-Learning portal will be used to permanently host these tasks after release to ensure that you can access the information required at all times.





Summative Assessment:



The module is assessed by:



A 2,500 word project weighted at 40%. [MLO2, MLO3, MLO4]

An examination weighted at 60%. [MLO1, MLO5]

Module abstract

The field of econometrics has evolved drastically in the last few decades, while modern advanced econometric techniques are prevalent in empirical work in many fields of economics and non-economics alike. At the same time, there has been advancement in econometrics software that has made it possible to undertake complex econometric and statistical analyses. This module aims to develop and enhance your knowledge and ability to evaluate and carry out a wide range of econometric analysis. You will apply econometric theory and estimation techniques to investigate practical and real-world problems. The module will equip you with the requisite knowledge and analytical skills required for empirical analysis.
