SP7018 - Performance Analysis and Data Analytics

What will I learn on this module?

On this module you will develop an in-depth understanding of the importance of performance analysis in sport and gain experience in designing, analysing and presenting sports performance reports. The module will cover topics such as; opponent analysis, data mining and player performance. The principles behind these processes and the techniques used to investigate these areas will be covered. You will get hands on experience using a range of technologies to understand the process behind analysis of performance and data analytics. You will learn what it is like to work in the applied performance analysis field with guest lectures from current performance analysts at a range of sporting organisations. You will be able to, by the end of the module, understand how to collect, analyse and present objective and reliable performance analysis data which can then be used to infer about individual’s and teams’ sporting performances.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn the theory and background understanding to the concepts of performance analysis in the lecture environment which will be tutor-led with small group tasks during some weeks. This knowledge will then be put into an applied situation in the practical laboratory sessions where you will take a lead role in performing the analysis of a range of sporting performances. Individually or in pairs you will work through set tasks to show understanding and to apply the theory to practice. You will also learn by group discussions at the end of each laboratory practical session where students will share their reflections on the processes that they have used during the session. This sharing of understanding and knowledge will benefit you in terms of your communication skills but will also enhance your listening and reflection abilities.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the eLP. Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. You will be provided with content verbally and guided through tasks during timetabled sessions. A dedicated assessment session will afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions in class. The Module Leader is there to support you with any queries that you may have about the module content, and all staff members provide tutorial time outside of class time. Module tutors will provide you with the necessary information on how to arrange a tutorial. You will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on your development during the module, and you will receive feedback on summative work to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial. There is also further academic skills support available from the University Library services.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. The reading list for this module can be found at: http://readinglists.northumbria.ac.uk
(Reading List service online guide for academic staff this containing contact details for the Reading List team – http://library.northumbria.ac.uk/readinglists)

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Critically demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the principles behind a sporting performance and the factors that influence this.
2. Evaluate and apply the different approaches to providing data analytics.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
3. Be able to conduct an individual data analysis project and utilise different technologies to obtain novel data.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
4. To collect and analyse data using morally correct and ethical behaviour.
5. Implement a curious and reflective approach to your own data analysis.

How will I be assessed?

During the module you will be required to work independently to design and analyse sports performances and present your findings (100% MLO 1-5), in the form of a presentation, followed immediately by a viva. The presentation (20 mins) requires creativity and a critical approach to the data findings. Novel methods of analysis during the presentation combined with a reflective approach for the viva (10mins) is required. The viva will follow straight after the presentation and will reflect upon aspects of the presentation.

Formative feedback on your use of relevant analysis tools will be provided during practical workshops.

You will receive written or audio feedback on your summative assessment to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial.

Module abstract

This module explores the processes, applications and contemporary issues of sports performance analysis applying theory and research related knowledge to practical applications. Developing key practical competencies and software proficiency is a main focus and aims to develop the student’s ability to deliver coach-driven, observational, and data-driven analyses. Working through topics such as; competition analysis, data mining and data visualisation, students will become proficient in a range of performance analysis technologies and will learn to combine these skills alongside utilising the latest and cutting edge discipline specific research. Student’s will develop individual project design and analysis skills and learn how to formulate these into a time-efficient and effective manner to engage with coaches and players to impact future performances.
