AC7029 - Leadership and Collaborative Working in Public Health and Healthcare

What will I learn on this module?

Through studying this module you will learn about the theories and models of leadership and management relevant to public health and / or healthcare management.
You will explore models of partnership working and the importance of working collaboratively to improve the health of the public. You will explore the application of leadership and management within contexts responsible for the provision of public health and / or healthcare management. You will gain an increased understanding of the importance of working in collaboration with partners to maximise resources and lead on health activities that aim to improve the health of the public and develop health services. You will critically evaluate a range of core concepts, theories and frameworks which are fundamental to understanding leadership and management theories and models of partnership working. You will have the opportunity to reflect on your own skill base and identify developmental needs in becoming an effective leader who is responsive and adaptive to change. Your learning on this module will include some of the key tasks involved in leadership and management within public health and / or healthcare management.

• Performance management and resource allocation in public health and healthcare management services
• Collaborative leadership skills development.
• Effective partnership working
• Approaches to negotiation and influencing
• Using tools for service improvement
• Leading in different public health and / or healthcare management contexts.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a range of approaches including learning via lectures which will introduce you to core concepts and theories underpinning the different topic areas you will explore. Seminars and workshops will also be used to support you in guided learning and a deeper exploration of the key concepts you have learned from the lectures. In seminars and workshops you will work in cross cultural and multi professional groups. External speakers employed as Leaders or Managers within public health and the healthcare management sector will be involved in the delivery of some lectures and seminars giving you the opportunity to discuss the application of theory and practice from their experience of leading in a public health and /or healthcare management setting.
Learning materials and exercises to enhance and develop your learning will be available on the e-learning portal together with links to key materials.

The use of formal and informal peer learning, where you share knowledge / experiences and learn from others will be used to broaden your understanding of the key concepts in leadership, management and partnership working. This will enable you to further develop your collaborative and partnership learning skills.

You will have the opportunity to develop an academic poster that depicts critical analysis of collaborative / partnership working / issues within an existing collaborative/ partnership public health or healthcare management project. This will be assessed formatively by your peers and then summatively by the module team.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The module team are very experienced and will strive to facilitate your learning. You will be allocated a tutor whom you can contact with any queries in addition to the teaching team and module lead. You will be encouraged to work collaboratively with your peers on both independent and guided learning outside of the formal setting as this is an effective way of developing and sharing knowledge.
Additional learning resources will also be available for you to access on the e-learning portal. You will also have access to skills plus and our exceptional library services where further support can be obtained in accessing relevant resources to support you both in the subject area and to enhance your study skills.

How will I be assessed?

This module has a two part summative assessment .The first element is the production of an electronic academic poster that will focus on collaborative and partnership working in public health / healthcare management. The second is a 2500 written piece of work that critically discusses and evaluates the importance of management and leadership theory within a public health and /or healthcare management context. The two elements are not directly linked.

The weighting of each component of the assessment is 50%.


Formative assessment
1. You will produce an electronic academic poster on one PowerPoint slide which will critically analyse collaborative / partnership working issues in an existing collaborative / partnership public health and / or healthcare management project of your choice. Examples of projects will be available on the e-learning portal or you can find your own. This will be presented to your peers for review and feedback. Your module tutor will also provide feedback on your work. This peer and tutor feedback will help you to develop your final electronic academic poster which is one element of the summative assessment.
The electronic academic poster will provide the opportunity for you to present a visual representation of key issues relating to the rationale and effectiveness of an example of public health or healthcare management collaborative / partnership working.

2. You will be asked to provide your allocated tutor with an outline plan of your essay .You will be given feedback at your 1:1 tutorial or electronically which you can feedforward into your final essay.

Summative Assessment

You will produce the final version of your academic poster which critically analyses collaborative / partnership working issues within an existing collaborative / partnership public health and / or healthcare management project.(MLO’s 1,2,3,4,5,)

You will submit a 2500 written piece of work, which critically discusses and evaluates the importance of management and leadership theory and its application within a public health and/or healthcare context based on given topic areas.

Module abstract

This module aims to critically explore theories and models of leadership, management, collaboration and partnership and their implications for improving public health and /or healthcare management in a range of settings. Different health leadership and management contexts will be explored.

The learning on this module will assist you in enhancing your leadership and management skills and collaborative / partnership working and gain a critical understanding of leadership and management requirements in the 21st century. You will work with staff who have experience of working within the public health and / or healthcare management sector. Your learning experience will be enhanced by the use of regular guest speakers who have expertise in leadership / management as well as the varied experiences other students bring to the learning environment.

The module is suitable for people from a range of backgrounds who aspire to be leaders and managers in the provision of public health and / or healthcare management related activity to promote the health of the public or who wish to further develop their leadership / management skills in a healthcare management setting.
