HR9691 - Fostering Sustainable Futures

Your learning journey on this module will comprise a combination of tutor-led and learner-led activities.
Tutor-led, research-informed, sessions will help you to develop an understanding of the processes of knowledge construction in the field of Organisation Theory and Practice. The lectures, seminars and online resources are designed with an emphasis upon you developing your critical analysis and problem solving skills as you examine the contemporary organisational concerns.
A learner-led, tutor guided approach will support you in developing your understanding of organisation theory and practice through employing a number of learning tools incorporated within the module structure.
You will receive formative feedback and guidance on how to start and complete your assignment (e.g. how to conduct research, analysis and final presentation of your assignment) through lectures, seminars and online learning resources

Support will be provided by:
• Academic session tutor who will facilitate your learning and support you through the led sessions whilst disseminating appropriate activities you should be engaging in during your independent study time. They are also available upon request during their office hours to support you outside of formal session time by responding to questions or concerns that you might have either via email or via individually pre-arranged appointments and/or drop-in sessions
• Module tutor during allocated consultation time to address teaching and learning issues
• Peers during seminar activities and associated team-based working
• Technology-enabled learning resources such as e-Learning Portal which provides detailed guidance on teaching and learning plan, lecture and seminar content, assessment, electronic reading list (providing direct links to textbooks, journal and conference papers), and multimedia resources

Tutor-led, tutor-guided and learner-led activities are organised in groups of around 20 working in smaller teams. This approach provides a closer, more personal academic support.

To support you in your academic progress, you will receive both formative and summative feedback/feed-forward on your work through the course of each academic year. Regular formative feedback on class activities provides you with the necessary guidance to scaffold your knowledge and understanding of key issues to enable your success in the final summative assessment. Summative feedback/feed-forward will be provided on your work after it has been assessed and graded. You should use all feedback that you receive to identify areas of strength and areas for future study and improvement.

Formative assessment:
Throughout the module you should actively participate in scheduled and self-directed activities and should engage in discussions, teamwork and feedback exercises to challenge your own thinking and that of your peers.

Face-to-face sessions will provide you with the opportunity to self-assess your knowledge and understanding through applying the different aspects/topics examined. You will work through small groups activities which will enable you to secure on-going feedback from your peers.

Summative Assessment:
Examination of, and critical engagement with, differing stakeholder perspectives on contemporary issues examined (100%)

This module uses the guiding framework of the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) to examine the contemporary challenges that face managers in their efforts to foster sustainable futures. Using advanced management theory, Critical Organisation/Management Theory, also academics’ contemporary research you will examine and challenge the debates between contrasting arguments/perspectives across a range of present-day organisational concerns that risk the sustainable future lives. These concerns will include sustainability, gender, uses and misuses of power and control, the future of work, culture.
