DE7009 - Fashion Design Experimentation

What will I learn on this module?

Fashion Design Experimentation DE7009 (Performancewear/Womenswear/Menswear) provides the platform from which you engage directly with your subject specialism framed in the Design Proposal module DE7008. It addresses the advancement of fashion concepts/artefacts through intense critical design practice that explores materials, technologies and processes. ?Through this studio and workshop experimentation you will gain an understanding of how to construct your product or provide proof of concept to enable you to advance your ideas for your Project/Thesis DE7003 in Semester 3. Your experiments and iterations to develop the product/garment are documented as drawings, photographs and other media as a portfolio of work that express the possible trajectory and development of the final product/garment. You will learn to present 2D and 3D design solutions to professional, highly creative standard pertinent to the research question. You will learn to clearly communicate and present concepts, ideas or conclusions to specialist and non-specialist audiences using appropriate media.
You will learn from staff with rich research and commercial experience from the Design Industries including Fashion, Design for Industry, Service Design, Design Management and Design Thinking. This multidisciplinary approach to teaching will help you to explore new ways of thinking and practices in design.

How will I learn on this module?

In Fashion Design Experimentation you will learn through using experimental development of materials, fabrications, processes and technologies to execute a body of work in drawing, photography and artefacts that make a portfolio of work that starts to explore the Proposal for a Fashion Product/Garment identified in Semester 1.

The learning for Fashion Design Experimentation will be primarily be studio and workshop based in order to develop 3D products/garments.

Through tutorial support and studio-based feedback, you will be expected to take responsibility for your own creative development and learning for this self-directed project. Formative feedback will be given throughout the module in studio sessions with peer evaluation forming an important activity in discussions on developing materials, processes and technologies.

You will maintain your PDP (Personal Development Plan) to aid your own creative development and learning in which you will record, reflect and analyse each of your design processes and activities to enable you to advance your design concept.

The supportive module in Design Process DE7002 will aid your continued Research, Research Practice (Research Through Design) and understanding of Business Models and Enterprise that help contextualise where your Performance Product sits in a social and commercial environment.

Your continued collaboration within the University and externally with professional networks, manufacturers and organisations will enable you to implement design work into the commercial environment. These connections in professional communities and networks that you build will enable you to move into, or return to, the workplace with greater impact.

This learning will aid you in identifying the most appropriate materials, technologies and processes to advance your conceptual product in the final semester for your Project/Thesis DE7003.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported by academic experts who will facilitate discussion in one to one tutorials and group critiques around your chosen subject of inquiry in scheduled timetabled sessions and directed study. These formal conversations are opportunities to receive immediate feedback on on-going work and to act on that feedback. You will also have technical support appropriate to your subject proposal to advance you design practice and experiment with materials and processes relevant to your concept.

You will keep a record of this feedback as part of your PDP in order to progress your work to enhance your skills and intellectual understanding to develop your experimental work with materials, processes and technologies that will aid the execution of your Fashion conceptual product and PDP. Your portfolio of work undertaken in the workshop will also document your reflective thought processes and show iteration and idea development

You will use reflective practice to progress your ideas through iterative cycles that help you problem solve with materials and processes and gain a richer understanding of your Fashion product/garment trajectory.

This Masters programme has been developed to capitalise on the extensive, active and well defined research of the Academic staff that contribute their expertise into the in Fashion Design curriculum

Where appropriate, you will be supported in developing relationships with material suppliers and potential companies that may support and have input into your developing proposal.

Further formal academic support is provided via information posted on E-Learning Portal. Where appropriate, students may also be directed to engage with Study Skills +, or other resources offered through the University Student Support Services such as Dyslexia Support. The Library is open 24 hours a day and E-Learning Portal houses all your module documents including your timetable. These services can be accessed on a range of devices

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. The reading list for this module can be found at: http://readinglists.northumbria.ac.uk
(Reading List service online guide for academic staff this containing contact details for the Reading List team – http://library.northumbria.ac.uk/readinglists)

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding (KU):
2. Develop your personal interpretation of theory and develop personal insights relevant to your field of practice.
3.Investigate and articulate creative and experimental approaches to a specific topic of inquiry developing your personal design knowledge and ethos.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities (IPSA):
1) Demonstrate the application of knowledge/theory/methods (as described in KU) in the context of your creative practice
4. Present a portfolio of work that evidences existing materials, processes, trials, products and current innovation that communicates your practice to a wide audience.

Personal Values Attributes (PVA):

4. Reflect on your own processes and practice to advance your knowledge and understanding of your research.
5.Liaise with relevant professional associations and external companies and academic staff.

How will I be assessed?

100% A Portfolio of work and artefacts that investigates your Fashion Design Proposal. This should evidence experimental use of materials and processes that start to create an innovative concept for product/garment. Reflective practice should be evident in evaluative written comments in the portfolio about the problem areas encountered which will contribute to your Personal Development Plan.

Formative assessment will be given throughout the semester through peer and tutor feedback with tutorial support helping to progress your work and enhance your design practice skills and intellectual understanding with experimental materials and processes.

Past students have had studentships from Berghaus from the Pentland groups of companies and Peacocks Healthcare to develop innovative soft products for specific markets and users.

This module is supported by the Design Process Module DE7002 which will help you contextualize business and design practice in relation to your Fashion Product/Garment.

It is expected that you will produce an investigative, creative and original design project that will push boundaries and current research to sit at the forefront of future thinking within the Fashion discipline. ?Your reflection upon your experiences through the programme of study will help demonstrate your creative, analytical and intellectual ability to enable you to become a professional practitioner within the Fashion Design Arena.
Learning will be studio and workshop based with formative tutor feedback in addition to directed and independent learning.
Assessment is through a portfolio of 2Dimensional and 3Dimensional Design work and accompanying reflective Personal Development Plan.
