Information for students on distance learning courses

We understand that distance learning students face a number of unique challenges, and provide access to the University Library to reflect this. We have a number of dedicated services for distance learners to ensure you can use the University Library in a way that works for you.

The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the resources you need. As part of this, we purchase materials in ebook and print format, and we also digitise chapters and articles to ensure that access to key reading list material is easier. Access your reading lists to discover these materials easily.

You can also use Library Search to find books, ebooks and journal articles.

Book Postal Service

Your University Library provides a postal service for books and journal articles which will be sent world-wide to Northumbria students who are studying part-time, by distance learning or are work based learners. Students who are on a placement for more than six weeks are eligible to use the service whilst on placement. Guidance on how to use this service is available here.

Finding and borrowing books

You can use Library Search to find books and ebooks. You can search for the book title, by author or use keywords.

Will I receive an ebook?

To ensure a speedy and convenient service for you, we will provide an electronic copy of your request where available. However, we are happy to provide a print copy if preferred.

How long can I keep a book for?

There are two loan types - 4 week and 7-day books. When posting items out, we will try and send out 4 week loan copies and if possible we will group all your requests together. Books will be issued for longer than the normal loan periods - 4 week loan books will be issued to you for 6 weeks and 7-day loan books will be issued to you for 3 weeks -  to allow for postage time.  Your books will automatically renew unless:

  • they are requested by another reader
  • there is a block on your account

If your books cannot be renewed or are requested, they must be returned. We will send you an email reminder at the appropriate time. If a book you have on loan is requested, that book will need to be returned and you will be advised of the actual due date; however your books will never be recalled earlier than the 6 or 3 week initial loan period.

What if I want something that is not in the Library's collection?

If you're interested in a resource which isn't currently part of our collection, you can ask us to borrow it for you via the Inter Library Loan service, and the item can be posted out to a UK address or an electronic version may be supplied. You could also recommend that we purchase a resource.

How do I return my books to the Library?

Books can be posted back to the Library using recorded delivery; you will have to meet the cost of the return postage. The address to post books back to is:

Northumbria University
University Library Book Postal Service
Ellison Place
Newcastle upon Tyne
NE1 8ST

You can of course, return books in person to City Campus Library, Coach Lane Library or our London Campus.
