OD6014 - Advanced Operating Department Practice

In your final practice module you will develop skills for transition from student to registered ODP as placement hour’s increase in correlation with your independent engagement with learning packages within BlackBoard Ultra. You will be focussing on leadership and management, advanced perioperative skills, clinical decision making and research. There is an expectation that you will fully engage in the self-directed study to analyse and synthesise knowledge in preparation to develop as a future ODP. Practising your professional and clinical skills with increasing independence, you will be seen as a role model, sharing your knowledge and skills whilst challenging practise when necessary. You will also engage in strategies such as action learning sets and peer coaching sessions to prepare you for your future roles in practice, education, research and management/leadership. You will continuously seek and use feedback from your Practice Supervisors, other students as well as individuals and families to enable self-reflection, focussing and shaping your learning. The Online learning packages within BlackBoard Ultra will give you a framework to organise your personal and professional development plan to enable achievement of your current goals and prepare you as a lifelong learner and future ODP.

In practice placements your Practice Supervisors, Practice Assessor, Academic Assessor and Practice Module Team will support and help guide your learning opportunities, working in partnership with Practice Placement Facilitators (PPFs) enriching your overall learning experience.

You will learn through a variety of methods, which will include Online Supported Learning (OSL), through engagement with a simulated practice environment and ‘tasters sessions’ in a clinical practice. Learning will be supplemented by websites and training packages, which will include access to the department’s specialist Skills4Practice website: https://www.s4pwebsite.com/

Engagement in group workshops will encourage you to work collaboratively with peers to build your knowledge and understanding. You will also be provided with the opportunity to link with fellow students in other healthcare professions. This introduces you to the task-work component of teamwork and reflects the realities of delivering effective care for people of all ages in the perioperative setting.

The module will be delivered using a blend of Blackboard Ultra and face-to-face practical sessions, underpinned by online learning resources. The focus of learning will be on rehearsal of Operating Department skills to build proficiency, develop understanding and enhance competence.


You will be supported by a Specialist Module Team of Lecturers in Operating Department Practice. You will receive ongoing guidance and feedback to ensure you are able to engage with concepts of safe operating department practice, the physical health, mental health and wellbeing status of people of all ages, and the academic rigour of the module.

You will also be supported via the modules OSL systems in addition to face-to-face teaching and group work activities and discussion. You will be able to contact the module team in person, by email or phone and through the Blackboard Ultra. Skills Plus, the University Library’s collection of online learning materials on Blackboard Ultra can be used to support the development of your academic skills. You will also support each other via peer support, through engaging in discussion and debate to enhance your learning. You will be continuously supervised in your practice placements, this will generate feedback for your assessments.

Formative Assessment:
You will undertake a variety of summative assessments, identified in the NE PAD, which include episodes of care, medication assessments, written reflections and service user/patient feedback.

At the end of each placement you will reflect on your practice development and review your progress with your Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor (MLO’s 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8)

Summative Assessment:

Graded – Following feedback from your Practice Supervisors, a grade will be awarded by your Practice Assessor and Academic Assessor against the proficiencies and evidence in the North East Electronic Practice Assessment Document (NE PAD) document.

This third year practice based module, will help you to consolidate the skills, attitudes and behaviours that you have developed over the first two years of the programme. This module will also provide you with the opportunity to advance your skills and knowledge directly relevant to your third year practice placement experiences and prepare you for working life as a registered ODP. It will specifically focus on leadership, quality and team work. You will be supported to become an accountable professional, working in teams to lead and manage quality perioperative care. In line with the philosophy of a concept curriculum, we will facilitate your active learning by requiring you to apply concepts in clinical contexts and allow knowledge transfer to unfamiliar situations. All of your learning materials will be online via the eLP as we help you to facilitate, greater independent learning as you transition to be a registered ODP.

Within the context of your practice placements, you will critically reflect and debate contemporary theories and explore service improvement models, which support sustainable service improvement. Applying your knowledge of team and interprofessional working you will learn how to coordinate safe and effective high quality care. This will include a collaborative approach embedding the views of service users, lay carers and colleagues in the delivery and enhancement of care. You will be provided opportunities to critically reflect on your own personal and professional responsibility for your continued development as a manager and future leader of service improvement. You will learn how to manage uncertainty and put into practice the strategies that develop resilience in yourself and others.

Your successful completion and grading of practice assessment against your (NEEPAD Part 3) proficiencies will contribute towards your application for registration with the HCPC.
