DA6017 - Advanced Skills for Perioperative Practice

What will I learn on this module?

The?BSc (Hons)?Operating Department Practice Integrated Degree Apprenticeship?programme?work-based route?aims to?ensure that students are able to demonstrate compassionate, safe, evidence-based and effective patient care, across the core areas of practice, at point of successful completion of the award?(CODP, 2018). As an Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) this module will consolidate the concepts and perioperative interventions from the previous skills modules and be delivered following Operating Department Practice Skills 5, Advanced Skills for Perioperative Practice . Building on your existing knowledge and skills you will enhance your development and become an agile skilled Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) in all areas operating department practice. You will be learning to apply high-level communication skills, previous knowledge and experience as well as your advanced knowledge of perioperative procedures to prepare you for autonomous practice. History taking skills will be developed and used as a framework for enhanced assessment and care of people of all ages. A range of dynamic learning opportunities both in the simulated and real-life practice setting will help to generate evidence, which will aid you in the completion of your Ongoing Record of Achievement (ORA), demonstrating that you are capable of a high standard of competent, safe and independent operating department practice.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a variety of methods, which will include practice learning, simulated practice, and Online Support Learning (OSL). These opportunities will be supplemented by websites and training packages, which will include access to the Department’s specialist Skills4Practice website: https://www.s4pwebsite.com/

Using your developed evidence-based practice approach, you will be observed in your ability to take a history, observe, recognise and accurately assess people of all ages. You will be provided with feedback to enhance your learning and this will allow you to be informed of your development as a future registered ODP.

The module will be delivered using a blend of web-based resources and face-to-face practical sessions that are underpinned by online learning resources. Blackboard Ultra will be used to provide access to both field essential learning and the opportunity to access learning that supports a greater depth of knowledge beyond your field specific content.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported by a module team of specialist lecturers. You will receive ongoing guidance and feedback to effectively engage with concepts of leadership, care quality, pharmacology and medicines administration, and field specific advanced perioperative procedures to ensure evidence based safe operating department practice.

You will obtain support from face to face dialogue with academic staff during seminars and workshops. You will utilise peer support during the directed and independent parts of the module. You will be provided with a group tutorial to support your summative assessment; this will be part of a seminar. You will also be supported via the modules on-screen learning (OSL) systems in addition to face-to-face teaching and group work activities and discussion. You will be able to contact the module team in person, by email or phone and through the Blackboard Ultra. Skills Plus, the University Library’s collection of online learning materials on Blackboard Ultra can be used to support the development of your academic skills. You will also support each other via peer support, through engaging in discussion and debate to enhance your learning. How will I be assessed?

Formative:

You will have the opportunity to be formatively assessed on your perioperative skills, through simulation-based experience in preparation for your End Point Assessment (EPA)

Summative:

End-Point Assessment:



Observed Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). Three stations, 20 minutes per station based around the patient journey; anaesthetics, surgery and post-anaesthetic care (100% weighting). Feedback will be given to apprentices electronically after the OSCE.

Summative:

End-Point Assessment:

60-minute Professional Discussion (50% Distinction/Pass/Fail weighting).

120-minute Observation of Practice and follow up Questions (50% Pass/Fail weighting).

Module abstract

Within this module, you will gain the skills needed to develop as a future ODP who is able to effectively combine knowledge and skills to lead excellence in perioperative practice. You will continue to have the opportunity to practice your skills in a simulated environment and be encouraged to continue peer assisted learning as you develop to an independent learner. You will enhance your assessment and communication skills through participating in history taking practice focusing on people of all ages in all settings. You will be encouraged to identify the evidence that underpins good practice, to further reflect on your own abilities and to develop increasing confidence and autonomy. Within the module, you will demonstrate resilience, tenacity and emotional intelligence and be capable of explaining the rationale that influences your judgments and decisions in routine, complex and challenging situations.
