AA0613 - Transition to an Accountable Practitioner in Adult Nursing

What will I learn on this module?

You will be learning more about nursing and the legislative and policy drivers that shape care delivery; locally, nationally and globally. The module examines the tools used to ensure evidence-based practice is delivered, taught, managed, evaluated and adapted so as to fit the needs of people of all ages, families and communities. You will learn how to synthesise information and consolidate your knowledge, skills and abilities so that you can move into a more advanced stage of your professional development. You will learn about the accountability and responsibility of managing a team. You will design a practice-based project so you can learn about the necessity for scholarship. This will be captured in a project proposal focussing on a particular clinical topic; one embedded in the real world of nursing practice and service user/carer experience. Completing a project proposal will provide insight and experience of various stages of inquiry, project management, problem solving and decision-making and the need for emotional intelligence. The module will continue to support your engagement in a holistic and systematic approach to nursing care; with critical analysis of systems, models and cross boundary working used in health and social care. During this module, you will learn about the process of transitioning from student to an accountable practitioner; this will encompass your roles as a leader, practice developer, creative and independent thinker, and someone who can challenge peers and colleagues appropriately. The module will facilitate some key components of your employability.

How will I learn on this module?

On this third-year module, you will learn by attending seminars and workshops hosted on campus. The strategies adopted during seminars and workshops will include presentations of your own work and that of your peer group, enquiry-based learning, problem-based learning, debates, case studies, case histories and group work. Members of the Module Team will facilitate the seminars and workshops.

You will learn by preparing to attend seminars and workshops. This preparatory work will be achieved by engaging in Independent Study. The Tutor Guided materials will include interactive learning packages, electronic lectures, workbooks and media outputs. The Module Team will provide advice on how and when to engage in your Tutor Guided Independent Study.

You will be engaging in Student Independent Learning. You will be able to choose what you would like to study in more detail. You can spend time preparing for your module assessment and /or generating evidence for your clinical practice placement.

On this module, we advise you to learn by reading and do not feel that it can be over emphasised during third year. Reading is vital for your academic and clinical development. Reading will provide technical information to enhance the evidence base for your clinical practice. Reading is also necessary for you to appraise the merits of a variety of writing styles, adopting the strongest and best of the characteristics in your own work to demonstrate progression in your scholarship.

An Academic Supervisor will be assessing you. All assessments are aimed to help motivate learning. On this Module, you will be preparing a practice based project proposal of 6000 words.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will obtain support from face to face dialogue with academic staff during seminars and workshops; they all have professional clinical backgrounds. You will utilise peer support during the directed and independent parts of the module. You will be allocated an Academic Supervisor to support the development of your practice based project proposal. You will have access to Northumbria University’s electronic and physical support services.
